He will be missed by his grandchildren Jeffrey (Lindsay) Yaroch, Kimberly Yaroch (special friend Mike LaCombe), Michael (Amanda) Yaroch, Scott Empkie, Jennifer (Daniel) Patterson, and Brian (Trina) Empkie; and his great grandchildren Anna and Charles Patterson, and Scarlett and Callen Yaroch, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Vera (Cecil) Erb, and his foster brother Walter (Violet) Julka. Fred will be remembered as a kind and caring man who was a pure gentleman, and always had a friendly smile for those he met.

Biography

Fred Charles Empkie Jr. 87, Dwight Township, passed away peacefully on Sunday July 23, 2017 at home surrounded by his loving family. Fred was the son of Fred and Anne (Damrow) Empkie. He was born February 13, 1930 in Bad Axe, Michigan. He graduated from Kinde High School in 1947. He was a member of the Kinde Presbyterian Church. Fred married Ann Hercliff on November 4th, 1949 in Pigeon. Ann preceded him in death on June 11th, 2005. They had celebrated 55 years of marriage. Together they raised their family on the family farm that has been in the Empkie family for 4 generations, since 1867, celebrating their sesquicentennial this year. Fred worked tirelessly maintaining his family farm. His desire has always been for the farm to remain in the family for future generations. He enjoyed playing cards, poker, and euchre and in his younger years he hunted and fished. Fred took pride in being a Grandfather to his 6 grandchildren and he adored his 4 great grandchildren. Fred and Ann had spent 15 years wintering in Bullhead City, Arizona, loving the warm climate and spending time with their friends.

WILLIAM P. KOWALESKI, age 71 of Port Hope, passed away Sunday, July 23, 2017 at Sanilac Medical Care Facility in Sandusky under hospice care. He was born on December 4, 1945 in troy to the late Casmier and Stella (Dunajski) Kowaleski. He worked in construction for most of his life. He enjoyed making sausage, his garden, and his grandchildren.

Biography

Holly Sue (McCracken) Lerash, 66, of Colfax Township, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on July 22, 2017 at her home under Heartland Hospice care after a short battle with cancer. Holly was born in Pigeon, Michigan on December 5, 1950. Her parents are the late Ford and Betty (Nicholls) McCracken of Bad Axe. She graduated from Bad Axe High School in 1969 where she was voted class clown. She had a love for horses and for dancing. Holly attended Central Michigan University for a year before settling back in Bad Axe. On March 12, 1983, she married Patrick F. Lerash. When Holly wasn’t busy working at the Franklin Inn, she was a member of the Wednesday Morning Women’s League at Caseville Golf Club. Her favorite golf player was Phil “Lefty” Mickelson. She also enjoyed playing cards, bowling, traveling, playing Keno, laughing with friends, spending time with her grandchildren and cuddling her cats. Holly was a joy as a friend, aunt, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be missed dearly.

Biography

Mrs. Ann M. Morell, 94, of Ubly, passed away on Thursday, July 20, 2017, at the Courtney Manor Nursing Home following a long illness. She was born on November 22, 1922 in Ubly, Michigan. She was the daughter of the late John and Agnes (Tschirhart) Pulcer. Ann married John P. Morell on April 16, 1940 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Schmitt’s Corners. He preceded her in death on December 30, 1999. Ann attended the Rapson Country School and was a lifelong homemaker and gardener. Ann was a former parishioner of St. Ignatius Catholic Church and was an active member of the Ladies Alter Society. She was a current parishioner of St. John Catholic Church/Good Shepherd Parish. Those who knew Ann best knew her hands were ones that tended children, nurtured many and tickled toes. In the face of ones darkness, Ann prayed, secured and consoled. Ann was blessed with praying and helping hands, hands that held on, held up and reached out, to greet, to welcome, to steady the grieving, the ill and the weak. Her hands sent a lot of signals—hold your thought, hold your knife and fork, hold your own—and privately, signs—a lot of signs—of the cross, of acknowledgement, of genuine regard for others. She especially enjoyed playing cards, puzzles, reading, travelling, visiting, letter and note writing and quilting.

Suzanne B Schember age 89, of Pigeon, formerly of Elkton, passed away peacefully at her home while under hospice care Thursday 7/20/17. She was born September 30, 1927, at the Mizpha Missionary church parsonage in Sanilac County to the late Allen and Mabel (DeGrooat) Herman. On September 2, 1950, she was united in marriage to Olin J Schember at the Elkton Missionary Church. They made their home on a farm in Grant Twp. southeast of Elkton a few years later. Olin preceded her in death February 22, 1981. Suzanne was a member of the Community Wesleyan Church and enjoyed crocheting, painting and making hook rugs.

He graduated from North Huron High School in 1980. Doug’s passion was farming and working on his land. He also enjoyed taking long drives, and visiting his many friends along the way.

She was a 1950 graduate of Unionville High School. On August 19, 1950 she married Bruce D. Protzman at Hayes United Methodist Church. Together with her husband she worked on the family’s dairy farm. She was a member of the Hayes United Methodist Church, Caseville American Legion Auxiliary and former member of Tip of the Thumb Leisure ministries. She was proud of her grandchildren, always willing to talk about her family and life.

RUTH ANN KUTZERA, age 73 of Harbor Beach, passed away Sunday, July 16, 2017 at Lakeview Extended Care and Rehab Center of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. She was born on July 7, 1944 in Bad Axe to Lucille (Dhyse) Emerick and the late Delbert Emerick. She and Joseph Kutzera were united in marriage on June 22, 1969 at Zion Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death on June 22, 2015. Ruth Ann was Past President of the Port Hope Retirees, she enjoyed going to the casino, and especially being with her family and grandchildren.

Biography

Hans Johann Michael Hellwig, 78, of Elkton died Saturday, July 15, 2017 at home. Hans was born September 13, 1938 in Germany to the late Hans and Hilde (Kiock) Hellwig. Hans immigrated to Detroit with his mother and step-father Reinhold Kretschmer, along with his two half brothers Jorg and Burkard. He told everyone he came over on the “banana boat” speaking no English. He worked as a dishwasher at Greenfield Restaurant, eventually becoming soup chef. He was drafted into the US Army in 1961, and upon the recommendation of his chef at the restaurant, he successfully requested to be an army cook. Upon discharge he began a 33 year career working as a pipe fitter for GM, the last 3 years with American Axle, before retiring in 1996. Hans moved to Elkton in 1998. He became active in the Elkton community, as part of the Chamber of Commerce, Lions and Historical Society, where he enjoyed explaining people about the blacksmith shop. He enjoyed time spent outdoors and with his cat Blackie.

Thomas J. Homrich, 85, of Port Austin, passed away Saturday, July 15, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. Thomas was born October 2, 1931 in Muskegon to the late Isadore and Louise Homrich. He began his successful career as a builder after his military service. His craftsmanship will live on in the many homes and projects he built and designed in Detroit, Huron County, and even Saudi Arabia. Thomas was an avid woodworker and handcrafted many one-of-a-kind birdhouses and driftwood creations. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and bravely served his country in the Korean War.

Biography

Jean Elizabeth Hostetler, 98, of Elkton died Saturday, July 15, 2017 at Maple Manor in Novi. Jean was born December 20, 1918 in Elkton to the late Mose and Bertha (Miller) Herford. She graduated from Elkton High School. She married Lloyd “Butch” Hostetler on June 2, 1940; he preceded her in death on March 11, 1991. Jean lived in Ferndale from 1946 until moving to Elkton in 1981, she worked for 15 years as a secretary at Beaumont Hospital before retiring in 1980. Upon retiring she enjoyed traveling the world with numerous trips to far off places, spending winters in Florida, and listening to gospel and country music. She was an active member of Elkton United Methodist Church. Over the years she had been a foster mother to over 100 children.

Onalee Marie (Sturm) Kervin passed away on July 15, 2017, surrounded by her children. She was born April 20, 1939, at the Bad Axe General Hospital to Don and Etta (Britt) Sturm of Pigeon. On September 3, 1960, she was united in marriage to James P. Kervin at St. Francis Borgia Church of Pigeon. Onalee was raised in Pigeon, graduating in 1957 from Pigeon High School where she was a cheerleader and drum majorette. Her favorite teacher was Mr. Robert Storey, her band director. During the summers, she enjoyed spending time with her friends and family at the family cottage in Caseville. Onalee enjoyed sewing, drawing, antique hunting, giving gifts, driving around the county visiting with family and friends, and most of all, she loved her four grandchildren.

Mayhew in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Bill was a member of the Pinnebog United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army from November 1945 – February 1947. Bill was a former president on the Board of Directors at the Elkton Co-op. He enjoyed working on his farm, golfing, RV-ing and traveling.

Robert W. Jordan, Jr., age 39, of Bad Axe, was given his angel wings on Monday, July 10, 2017 at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe, with his family by his side. Bob was born in Bad Axe on June 17, 1978, son of Robert Jordan Sr. and the late Karen (Prill) Nichols. He married Marcia Maxwell on August 31, 2002 in Elkton. He was a parts manager at Ordus Ford for almost 20 years. He enjoyed camping, snowmobiling, hunting, Tiger’s baseball and racing his Ford Mustang at the Ubly Dragway. He especially loved playing and coaching softball and baseball with his kids. Bob lived life to the fullest, always outdoors having a few beers with family and friends.

She was a parishioner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, St. Hubert Parish in Bad Axe. She was employed at McDonald’s restaurant for over 30 years. Donald was retired from the Harbor Beach Community High School, he was also Co-Owner of Don’s Water Service. He was an avid golfer, and was a member of the Grace Bible Church in Harbor Beach.

Biography

Dr. Manuel Teves, age 94, of Harbor Beach, Michigan, succumb into the hands of our Lord Jesus Christ on July 4th, 2017, following a brief illness. He was born in Dumaguette, Phiilppines on the island of Mindinao of parents Rosa and Mariano Teves. His paternal grandfather father, Lluch Teves had immigrated to the PI from Valencia, Spain, who had then, begun the Teves Family in the Philippines. He met Patricia McKenney, RN, from Tillsonberg, Ontario in Blain Hospital in Detroit 1962, where they had married in the chapel, and wedding announcement shares that they threw aspirin at the wedding. They had moved from Detroit during the riots of 1967 to Harbor Beach, Michigan, where both Manuel and offered their medical services to the citizens of Harbor Beach and surrounding areas. Dr. Manuel Teves had served as a Guerilla fighter in the Philippine Islands during WWII for the American Army. His story had been authored by Janis Stein in her book, “Home Town Hero’s.” Dr. Teves had served the Harbor Beach community since 1969 and served the Harbor Beach Community for 33 years as a General Surgeon, Family Practice Physician, and had been the Chief of Staff of the Harbor Beach Hospital. Dr. Teves had graduated from: San Carlos University, Philippines with an Associate of Art in Prescribed Medicine in 1949; Manila Central University with a Doctor in Medicine in 1954; Completed an internship in St. Mary’s Long Beach Hospital 1954; Board Certified in the Republic of the Philippines in 1956; completed a residency in Family Practice in Borgess Hospital Kalamazoo in 1958; a 5 -year surgical residency at Alexander Blain Hospital, Detroit, Michigan; was deemed a Fellow by y the American College of Angiology in 1964 deemed both a Physician and Surgeon by the Michigan State Board of Registration in Medicine in 1965; and a Fellow by the American Geriatrics Society in 1966 Dr. Teves faithfully devoted his career to providing comprehensive and compassionate family practice and surgical medical services to citizens of the Harbor Beach community and surrounding towns, whom he treasured. Dr. Teves was typically found either in the emergency room, operating room, on rounds in acute care, or operating room, or House Call visits. He also enjoyed spending his free time by the lake avidly working outdoors gardening or cutting wood with his chain saw, driving his tractor, visiting Apple Orchards, and drinking coffee. Dr. Teves would also enjoy sitting by his picturesque window reading his Bible and spent much time in morning and bedtime praying his rosary and reading scripture. His favorite the verse, “You shall love the Lord with all of your heart, with all of your soul, and with all your mind and second, it is like this. You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” Matthew 22: 37: 39. His favorite past times included: fishing, spending time outdoors, and spending time with his family and “Meg.” He and Patricia Teves enjoyed a cottage in Paint Lake Ontario, Northern Canada which was very rustic and they had also gone on several hunting and fishing excursions in both Ontario and Michigan. Dr. Teves had been a member of Holy Mary Parish Harbor Beach. He had also been a member of the Lions Club and the Veterans of Foreign War in Harbor Beach. In the past he had been an active member of Huron County Medical Society, along with his wife.

She married William Schulz on Novmeber 28, 1942 in Elkton; he preceded her in death on May 26, 1987. She was an active member of Cross Lutheran Church, having been a Sunday school teacher and ladies group member. She helped on the family farm and enjoyed gardening and sewing.
