Gallegos-husband Antonio, Laura Rau- husband David, Erica M. Miglicco-husband Jeffery; Grandsons Robert G. Hirsch-wife Tori, Troy Frazee, and Richard F. Hirsch. She is also survived by numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Florence was preceded in death by her son William H. Hirsch who is survived by his wife Diana.
Florence Marie Hall Abssi, 95, of Houston, Texas, passed away from this life to the arms of our Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday afternoon, November 29th, after a long and valiant struggle with illness. Florence was born in Bad Axe, Michigan on July 26, 1919 to the Reverend Herbert Hall of Yorkshire, England and Mildred E. Jones Hall from Bad Axe, Michigan. She attended Sebewaing High School and graduated early at the age of 16. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and her Master’s degrees from Eastern Michigan University and the University of Texas. Florence was an accomplished violinist and performed at esteemed venues, such as Carnegie Hall. She was a member of the Teaneck Symphony in New Jersey and played with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic. She performed numerous times in Huron City for the famous author, critic, writer, and orator Rev. William Lyon Phelps. In the late 1930’s and early 1940’s, Florence sang with several big band orchestras including the Loren Towne Dance Band. Florence is a published author and has written several books, the first of which was set in the Bad Axe and Port Hope areas. Early in her career and during WWII, she worked at the Douglas Aircraft Company. After the war, she taught at elementary, junior high and high school in New Jersey, as well as Texas. However her passion was operating the several retail stores that she and her husband, Ali Abssi, established in the early 1960’s. These stores included the World Trade Center Imports and the Ishtar Gate Gallery, both located in Houston. The Ishtar Gate Gallery is still in operation today and has existed in the Galleria for 40 years. Florence was active in the many businesses and stores until she was incapacitated. Florence and Ali were also dealers in precious stones, fine art, jewelry, antiquities and real estate. Also, at an age when most people would have long since retired, she formed Texas State Land Exchange and several other companies. Florence was a trailblazer in every direction that life took her, age was truly just a number to her. Florence was an extensive world traveler, loved the thrill of a new adventure and loved people and their many cultures and foods. She could engage in conversations on any topic and was truly one of the brightest intellects of our time. She has beloved friends on every continent and many different countries. We will miss her engaging smile, her spellbinding stories, clever wit and sparkling personality. She truly lived life to the very fullest and most importantly, she was very loved by her family and friends. Florence loved to return to the “Thumb” to visit and attend class reunions or the Baker/Ramsey family reunions. It allowed her to return to the towns and areas that she so loved. She travelled the world and lived in different areas of Texas, Oklahoma, New York, New Jersey and New Mexico, but at heart she was always a Michigan girl and wanted to return there where so many of her beloved family have also been laid to rest.

Mary Ann Murawski, 85, died Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. She was born September 14, 1929 in Dwight Township the daughter of the late George and Veronica (Ignash) Lasceski, the youngest of 10 children. She and Charlie Murawski were married on October 25, 1947 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Port Austin. He preceded her in death on January 21, 1975. Mary Ann was employed by the Catholic Dioceses of Michigan. She worked for Father Richard Rabideau at St. Michael’s of Port Austin, St. Elizabeth’s of Reese and Sacred Heart of Birch Run. After her retirement she took nursing classes. She received her degree as a certified nursing assistant. She was a member of Annunciation of the Lord Parish, St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Port Austin and also a member of the Rosary Sodality. She was a very caring, kind hearted person. She was a very avid newspaper reader, reading any and all newspapers she could find from top to bottom.

James Freebury, age 82 of Port Hope, passed away Thursday, November 27, 2014 at Harbor Beach Community Hospital. He was born on October 4, 1932 in Pontiac, to the late Raymond and Mariel (Tracy) Freebury. James and Beverly Buckley were united in marriage in 1957. James served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired Superintendent of the GM Production. James was also the park manager at the Stafford County Park in Port Hope. James loved to Fish and Hunt.

Leola Lucille Engelhardt, age 85, of Sebewaing, died peacefully, on November 26, 2014 at home with her children by her side. She was born on March 18, 1928 in Akron to Robert and Effie (Hilde) Dickson. On June 2, 1945 she was united in marriage to Elmer Engelhardt in Kilmanagh. He preceded her in death on April 11, 1986. Leola worked several jobs for General Cable, Cass City and retired after 38 years. She also worked for Automotive Industries in Owendale. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Kilmanagh, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary # 4115, and the Moose and USA Senior Citizens. Grandma Engelhardt especially loved her family and her grandchildren – “and that’s why she bought a station wagon”. Leola loved her pet dog Mattie, her flowers, feeding the birds and squirrels, and traveling with her dear friend Helen Sefton.

She was born in Detroit, the first child born to David and Eleanore (Ostrowski) Osentoski. After high school Betty worked at Dibbles in Bad Axe before beginning a gob at the Ubly High School Cafeteria where she worked for 14 years. She later worked as a nurse's aide and phlebotomist in the lab at Huron Memorial Hospital for 30 years retiring in 1998. Betty was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ubly since she was 8 years old. There she was an active choir member and commissioned lay minister. Betty was known for her talent in helping with the church decorations. After moving to Cass City she became a member of St. Pancratius Catholic Church. Betty enjoyed cooking, canning, gardening, sewing, and crocheting.

Agnes Sarah Ross, 82, of Filion, passed away Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at the Huron County Medical Care Facility after a long illness. She was born October 30, 1932 in Meade Township, daughter of the late Mathias and Nellie (Ritter) Schmitt. She married Frank Ross on May 5, 1956 at the home of George and Goldie Ross, in Glennie, Michigan. They lived in Farmington for 16 years and then moved to Filion in November of 1972. Frank preceded her in death on December 29, 1985. Agnes attended Brown Rural School and was a 1950 graduate of Bad Axe High School. She worked as a bookkeeper for various CPA offices in Farmington, Detroit, and Bad Axe. She had great respect for CPA Ed Moore, of Bad Axe, for his work ethics. She was also a bookkeeper for Connor’s Hardware and The Print Shoppe. She was Meade Township Deputy Treasurer for four years before becoming the Treasurer for 13 years. She truly enjoyed this job and visiting with all the taxpayers. She was a parishioner of St. Felix Church, Pinnebog and Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bad Axe. Agnes enjoyed family get-togethers, sharing her scrapbooks of newspaper clippings and her photo albums, crocheting, playing euchre, planting, watering and tending to her many flowerbeds, baking and cooking (especially sugar cookies, macaroni and cheese, and deviled eggs), spending time at her cabin in Glennie, and sharing stories of growing up with her grandchildren.

From that union came five children: Krimhild, 54, Havre, MT, who survives her and gave Bernhild and Frank six, beautiful grandchildren (Cletus Knowles, III; Athesia Lassle, Pierce Knowles, Daniela Watkins (Adam), Marcus Corley; and Jaren Labbe). Then there is Maximilian, 49 and Anna, a retired lieutenant colonel residing in Texas, now working for the Texas Department of Public Safety. Bernhild suffered through the death of not one, but two children: Franklin Johann, who died in infancy; and Daniela Irene, who died in 1981 after being struck by a truck, waiting for the school bus. Bernhild took the death of Daniela especially hard, never fully recovering from the incident.
Bernhild Therese (Gest) Corley held her husband’s (Franklin Pierce Corley) as he lay dying in a hospital bed, about to go and see his youngest daughter, and his oldest son, again, on November 18, 2014. My mother was now completely brokenhearted. The love of her life, for 55 years, was gone. She wanted to go with him. She finally, reached out her hand to him, and he took it. Her youngest daughter, Daniela Irene, was with Dad to greet her. There is no more pain. She left this life to be with him on 24 November 2014. Bernhild Therese Corley, was born April 18th, 1940, in Munich, Germany to Hans and Anni (Kroiss) Gest. Bernhild was the apple of her father’s eye and there are numerous pictures to show how enamored of her that he was. She was his “Schnecki.” From working out in their little garden, to playing on the porch, Hans Gest, a German Luftwaffe pilot, showed his soft spot to his little Bernhild. She was devastated when he was reported missing in late 1943, having been shot down over Kiev, The Ukraine. Following the War, Bernhild did her best to help her mother, Anni, keep the family together. It molded Bernhild into being a very independent, strong woman. People in Munich were relieved that it was the Americans, and not the Soviets, who had occupied Munich. It helped West Germany, and Munich in particular, recover much more quickly. She would recount how kind the American Soldiers were to the citizens of then-West Germany. In her late teens, she would meet a Soldier, Franklin Pierce Corley, and he would steal her heart, convincing her to come to the States and make a life with him, which she did in 1959, marrying him on November 5, 1959. While their family was growing, Bernhild followed Frank around for over 20 years, to most of his duty stations, and tolerated his volunteering for assignments to Vietnam. If anything aged her, it was these assignments overseas where she knew very little of how he was doing. She managed to keep the family together back in the states, instilling in her children independence and a strong will. Bernhild also infused her children with a love of learning and rarely allowed them to stay home from school unless they were truly ill—a mere cough would not suffice as evidence! Though Bernhild would rarely show it, she had a very soft heart—helping those who needed it. Whether it was dinner during the holidays, or a place to stay for a while, Mom and Dad always opened their hearts and their homes to those in need. Bernhild enjoyed breaks away from Michigan in the fall (it was the only time she could get Frank away from the restaurant!) when she and Frank went to West Virginia for a well-earned rest. They always made time to visit Daniela’s and Frankie’s grave, ensuring they were kept trim and neat. In later years, Bernhild suffered from a debilitating disease that nearly cost her life then (1995). That disease, Poly-meiositis, attacked organs and the immune system and was the instigator for multiple heart attacks. That stubbornness that she is known for, however, kept her going. We think she knew Dad couldn’t live without her. The first thing she always checked after getting out of the hospital was the dryer lint trap…on more than one occasion; he had not cleaned it out after doing laundry. She was routinely astounded that Frank hadn’t burned the house down. Through all of the sickness and hospital stays, Bernhild always managed to take care of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In several instances, she took her grandchildren in to raise them. For all of the steel in her back, she had a very soft heart for “her babies.” Mom was a member of the Catholic faith, and credits the faith for helping her through the grief of losing two children. Bernhild’s granddaughter, Daniela Marie, and her husband, Adam, along with their three daughters, Emily, Joscelyn, and Maygen, did a phenomenal job of taking care of Bernhild in the last several months. Mom was very fond of Adam and took him into her confidence often. A special thanks, also goes out to the caring folks at the Sanilac Medical Care Facility. Their warmness in caring for both Frank and Bernhild eases the pain a bit that her children, and grandchildren, are feeling. So, Bernhild is at St. Peter’s desk arguing with Frank. St. Peter is kicked back with a bag of popcorn watching the entertainment. Mom is telling Dad that he WILL NOT put the heat up on their cloud. Dad is tweaking her ire, by calling her “Bernie,” and telling her that he will jack it up to 85-degrees! Daniela, Frankie, Hans & Anni are all laughing as well. It is a very sad day here on earth, but it is a GLORIOUS day in heaven. Mom & Dad are together again.

Orv is survived by his wife, Hilda Gremel; three daughters, Kay (Ronald) Lee, Ann (Dave) Germond, Joan (Bryan) Marko and one son, Joel (Lyndsay) Gremel; eight grandchildren, James Lee, Jonathan Lee, Katherine Najduk, Abigail Rodriguez, Jeffrey Germond, Julie Hoopes, Erica Gremel and Grant Gremel; and seven great grandchildren. Orv is also survived by two sisters, Betty Kundinger and Norma (Vern) Bates and a brother, James (Judy) Gremel; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased in death by his parents, Arnold and Esther Gremel; a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Alfred Taglauer; and two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Florence Ewald, Karl Kundinger, and Roland and Dorothy Dehmel.
Orville Arnold Gremel, "Orv", age 94, of Sebewaing, MI, entered Heaven’s Gate on November 24, 2014. Orv was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Bach, MI and a dedicated Sebewaing farmer for more than 50 years. Born on June 22, 1920 in Sebewaing to parents Arnold & Esther (Baur) Gremel, Orv was one of five children. He married Hilda Dehmel on March 4, 1944. Together, they raised four children. After graduation from Sebewaing High School in 1938, Orv worked the family farm while raising his family. During that time, he was a past member of the Sebewaing Lions Club, Michigan Farm Bureau, Pigeon Cooperative and the Huron County Planning Commission. He was an Honorary Chapter Farmer of the Sebewaing Future Farmers of America. Orv was also active at St. Peters Lutheran Church, Bach, MI, holding many different offices over the years. In August of 1970, Orv hosted Michigan Bean Day, a statewide exposition in which over 1,500 people visited his family farm. In 1972, Orv was appointed by Governor William Milliken to the Michigan Bean Commission in which he served for five years, and one of those years as Chairman. While on the Bean Commission, Orv served as part of the Michigan delegation which conducted Agricultural trade missions to Europe. When not farming, Orv enjoyed spending time with his family, was an avid ice fisherman and member of the Ricardo's Hunting Lodge. He loved playing cards with friends in Sebewaing and Boynton Beach, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her son Richard in 2007.
Ida Berniece Hearsch, 95, of Bad Axe, wife mother and community leader passed away Monday, November 24, 2014, at Country Gardens, in Pigeon. She was born March 3, 1919 in Elkton to the late Daniel and Marie (Leckenby) Krohn. She married Francis J. Hearsch, Sr., on June 24, 1939, in Flint. They moved to Bad Axe in 1946 and opened Hearsch Studio. He preceded her in death in 1982. She was a member and Eucharistic Minister of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Saginaw Diocesan Council of Catholic Women. She was a founding member of the Bad Axe Child Study Club and the Clothe a Child Program. She was a recipient of the Jaycees Distinguished Service Award. She belonged to the Bad Axe Historical Society, Verona Hills Golf Club and the Bad Axe Bridge Club. She was a published author of 2 books; “The Roots, The Trees, The Branches: One Woman’s Memories” and “I Am Jam”, a children’s book about her cat. Dorothy L. Wenzel, age 83, of Sebewaing, joined the Church Triumphant on November 24, 2014 at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe, Michigan. She was born April 8, 1931 in Detroit to Robert, Sr. and Martha (Stecker) Hanke. At the age of 13, her family moved to Sebewaing, and Dorothy graduated from Sebewaing High School in 1949. She earned a Bachelors Degree from Central Michigan University, and was a teacher for many years, first in Owendale, and then in Sebewaing and USA Public Schools. On June 21, 1958 Dorothy was united in marriage to Kenneth O. Wenzel. They had been married 55 years when he preceded her in death November 2, 2013. Dorothy was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and had been involved with the Couples Club and LWML. Over the years she enjoyed sewing, bowling, painting, playing cards, doing puzzles, shopping, and spending time with family.

Sylvester Peyok, 91 of Kinde, died Saturday, November 22, 2014. He was born October 11, 1923 in Lincoln Township, son of the late Joseph and Agnes (Koroleski) Peyok. He and Anna Krozek were married on November 7, 1959 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rapson, Mi. She preceded him in death on July 23, 2001. Sylvester was a lifelong Lincoln Township farmer and he was a railroad conductor for almost 30 years. He worked for the New York Central and Penn Central Railroad lines, as well as Conrail and Amtrak. He enjoyed traveling with his family. He visited 49 states, ten Canadian provinces and parts of Mexico. His most recent trips were to Santa Barbara, California in 2010 and Washington DC in 2013. He loved fishing on his boat with his family in the Grindstone area. He enjoyed reading, watching birds and the outdoors in general.

She was united in marriage to Jerry Lee Berger on December 7, 1963. He preceded her in death on August 18, 1995. Emma was a beloved foster grandma for 20 plus years working at the Harbor Beach Community Schools, Bad Axe Public Schools and just recently the Kinde Public Schools. Emma enjoyed working every day with all the littley ones. In her free time, she loved to crochet and visit with friends and family.

His granddaughter, Daniela Watkins, along with her husband, Adam and daughters (Emily, Joselyn, and Maygen) took extraordinary care of him in his final days. Many thanks go out to Sanilac Medical Care, for their tenderness with my father. So, finally, Franklin gets to go home and see his daughter, son, parents and grandparents. We know St. Peter will let him in, after Frank tells him a few jokes. Daniela, his youngest daughter, will take him by the hand and lead him into the gates of heaven. There will be a fishing pole waiting for him. They’ll go fishing for crappie once again.
Franklin Pierce Corley, 78, was called to his own recliner to eternal rest and to watch life on the sidelines, with the angels and go fishing with his youngest daughter, Daniela, on November 18, 2014. Frank was born on July 17, 1936 in a little town called Philippi, West Virginia, to Thomas Noah Corley and Margaret Lee (Munson) Corley. As his parents divorced when he was quite young, he went to live with, and was raised by, his grandmother, Belle (Krumbeigle) Munson, a strong woman who instilled in young Frank right vs. wrong. He grew up during the latter years of the Depression and during World War II. Times were not easy for young Franklin. If it weren’t for his Aunt Sybil, Frank wouldn’t have had shoes or a coat to wear to school during the winter. Many times, if he didn’t catch fish or bring in a deer from a hunt, the family went hungry. Frank loved to fish and hunt. Frank knew the value of a hard day’s work. Frank was a graduate of Coalton High School, Coalton, WV. He was also a graduate of several Army and Air Force technical schools. As he approached manhood, he knew he did not want to work in the coal mines. Instead, he joined the Army, completing basic combat training in November of 1956. As luck would have it, he was eventually sent to West Germany where he met a lovely fraulein, Bernhild T. Gest, whom he somehow convinced to marry him, though he did not know a lick of German, and she didn’t know a lick of English. They obviously figured it out! It is said, however, that Frank revered his mother-in-law, Anni Brey. Frank and Bernhild married on November 5, 1959, in West Virginia. There began the odyssey of Frank and Bernhild. Frank and Bernhild brought five children into the world. Krimhild, 54, who lives in Montana, gave them six grandchildren (Cletus Knowles, III, Athesia Lassle, Pierce Knowles, Daniela Watkins, Marcus Carter, & Jaren Labbe). Franklin Johan, the second born, predeceased him. Maximilian, 49, came next. Anna, 48, is a retired lieutenant colonel, currently residing in Texas. Daniela, the baby, was wrenched from the family in 1981 when she was hit by a truck while waiting for the school bus. Franklin’s heart, and his mind, never fully recovered from this tragedy. Frank is also survived by cousins Arnett Brown Corley, Jr, of Elkins, WV, Mary Jo Jones, Charleston, WV, Michael T. Corley, Charleston, WV, Craig Corley, Lewistown, VA, and Kathryn Joann Nee (Corley), of Pittsburgh, PA. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Eberhard Gest, France, and his family. Those who knew Franklin may, or may not, know that he was a bit of a “bad ass.” He followed in his ancestors’ footsteps and answered the call from the nation on more than one occasion. Several times, he went to Vietnam and served this nation proudly, instilling in his progeny Duty, Honor, and Country. He never went for the ‘medals,’ he went for the mission. This includes actions taken during not one, not two, but THREE deployments to Vietnam and the surrounding area. Something else he instilled in his progeny—he always stood out in his assignments and always stood up for his troops and airmen. Each time he came home with orders for a new assignment, Bernhild dutifully followed along to the next duty station. MSgt Corley was awarded many commendations during his service in both the Army and the Air Force (he transferred from the Army to the Air Force after about 10 years). He retired from the Air Force in 1981 after serving over 25 years. Bernhild finally put her foot down in 1979, when they arrived in Michigan. She didn’t want to move anymore. They bought a house, and Dad bought a restaurant, “Corley’s Thumb Restaurant.” It kept Frank busy over the years. So many people in Port Austin foretold his “Going Out of Business,” year after year after year. He stayed in business for over 30 years. Kids loved to go to Frank’s. Frank loved kids. He would make special hot cakes for them…bunnies, Mickey Mouse….who can forget “The Round Table,” where all of the world’s problems were discussed, and usually fixed, by the town’s elders and Frank…who had an opinion on everything. During this time, with all of the “birds out of the nest,” Frank would close the restaurant in October and take Bernhild, in their RV, to West Virginia for some R & R. The Alpine Campground, near Elkins, was their “stop” to relax for a while, and for Dad to catch up with relatives and maybe get some fishing in. Frank and Bernhild were known to help those in need. Whether it was food for a family struggling, or taking in someone who didn’t have a place to live, Frank and Bernhild were always a shelter for those in a storm. Frank didn’t believe in tooting his horn about this, as he believed in “do not let your right hand tell your left hand what it is doing.” In the later years, we saw he was getting tired. Bernhild knew it was time to close the restaurant. They sold it in 2012. Little Frank genealogy trivia for you: Frank did not know his father very well. Interesting to note, he ran his restaurant EXACTLY the way his father did…right down to the way he dressed, according to Franklin’s step-brother, Ed. In later years, Frank was very interested in all of the genealogical information his daughter, Anna, had relayed to him, including the family’s roots and service since the beginning of the nation’s life. Frank knew little about his family, on either side, so he enjoyed this a great deal. Frank had been a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

James J. Eisengruber, age 89, died Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe following a 3-week illness. He was born April 9, 1925 in Saginaw, son of the late John J. and Lena (Ort) Eisengruber. He was united in marriage to Kathryn (Kay Walker) on Sept. 6, 1958 at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Pigeon. Jim had served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952 during the Korean Conflict. He had been a deputy for the Sebewaing Police Dept. from 1952 until becoming the chief of police in 1964. He then was employed at Defoe Shipbuilding in Bay City and accompanied 6 ships to Boston. He had been a machinist at Sebewaing Tool and Engineering from 1973 until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of Holy Family Our Lady Consolata Catholic Church in Sebewaing, Honorary member of the Knights of Columbus, served on the Sebewaing School Board, was a member of the Sebewaing Fire Department from 1952 to 1964; involved in organizing the Sebewaing Sugar Festival for many years and was a member of the Sebewaing American Legion Post #293.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Thursday at the Community of Christ Church, Grant Twp. Elder Karen Bouverette will officiate with burial in Grant Twp. Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 PM Wednesday at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton and at the church after 10 AM Thursday. Memorials may be given to the family and words of condolence may be shared at www.cfcelkton.com.
Surviving are her husband, Joe; three children, Debra (Bill) Harris of Unionville, Robert (Tammy) Pillsbury of Sebewaing and Beth Pillsbury of Sebewaing; nine grandchildren, Lisa (Shane) Spriggs, Tommy, Troy, Justin Harris, Crystal (Joel) Dressler, Amanda, (James) Heckroth, Amber Pillsbury, Clint and Carrie Sheufelt eight great grandchildren and one great great grandson; a sister, Genevieve Abbe of Owendale and brother, Herb (Jeanne) Severn of Unionville. Preceding her in death was a granddaughter, Cassidy McHalpine and brother-in-law, John Abbe.
Anna L. Forro age 77, of Grant Twp., near Owendale passed away Monday evening, November 17, at Hills and Dales Hospital, Cass City. She was born January 23, 1938, in Grant Twp. to the late Peter and Elma (Parker) Severn and lived in Grant Twp. all her life. She was united in marriage to Joseph Forro in August of 1970 at Salem Lutheran Church, Sebewaing. Anna was employed at General Cable, Cass City for over 20 years retiring when it closed. She was a former member of the Owendale RLDS Church and had been attending First Baptist Church of Caro until health began to fail. Anna enjoyed reading, doing cross word puzzles, cooking and baking.
