She was preceded in death by her infant daughter Judith and brother James Fleming.

Biography

Judith Fleming Lesock, 81, of Caseville died suddenly Sunday, December 14, 2014 at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. Judy was born May 31, 1933 in Pinnebog to the late Charles Jay and Mildred Jane (Varney) Fleming. She graduated from Elkton High School in 1950 and then attended Central Michigan University. She graduated from Henry Ford Hospital School of Nursing in 1954. On July 1, 1955 she married Dr. William John Lesock of Lakewood, Ohio at St. Steven Catholic Church in River Rouge. He preceded her in death on October 22, 1998. Judy worked as a registered nurse at Henry Ford and Beaumont Hospitals before remaining at home to raise her family. In 1988 she retired to Ponte Vedra, Florida where she became involved with the PGA Tour for 10 years. After her husband’s death she returned to the Thumb, settling in Caseville. She was a member of the Caseville United Methodist Church and their altar society, Caseville Eagles Auxiliary, Henry Ford Hospital Alumni Assoc., Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority, an active volunteer at Helping Hand Thrift Store, and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Mount Clemens Symphony Orchestra.

Biography

Carole M. Anderson, 84 of Caseville, passed away Friday, December 12, 2014 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. She was born in Akron, Michigan on March 6, 1930 and was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Cora G. (Louks) Rohlfs. On December 23, 1952 she was united in marriage to William J. Anderson in Caro. Carole received her Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1952 from Alma College, where she was also a Homecoming Queen. She was a piano teacher for many years. She taught music with Caseville Public School in 1975 and Bad Axe Public Schools 1976-1989. She worked for Real Estate One in Caseville through the 1990’s. Carole enjoyed traveling with Bill and wintering in Arizona. She was a member of the Caseville Library Club for many years, and she conducted the Caseville Community Cantata for many years as well. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Pigeon.

Bob graduated from Davenport University with a Bachelor’s in Business Management. He was a member of the Board of Directors at Huron Behavioral Health. Bob enjoyed being in the outdoors, taking care of animals and working in his flower and plant gardens.

Charles M. Klee, age 74, of Bad Axe, passed away on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at his home. He was born on April 11, 1940 in Harbor Beach, son of the late Charles and Anna (Gusa) Klee. He married Judy Samulski on October 15, 1966 in Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. Chuck worked several years at Active Industires/Tower Automotive. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and eating out at various restaurants and coffee shops with family and friends. He had a gift for tinkering with lawn mowers or whatever needed fixing. He was a good hearted soul and was very generous when it came to helping others in any way he could.

She was the daughter of the late William and Martha (Lidke) Hartz. On June 12, 1948 she married Casper Miller. He preceded her in death February 2000. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid. She helped her husband many years with the family commercial fishing business. She enjoyed riding her bike, baking, walking, flowers and spending time with her family.

Biography

Hermingilda “Gilda” Watterworth, 86, of Marlette, formerly of Caseville, died Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at the United Hospice Service of Marlette Hospital. Gilda was born March 4, 1928 in Vienna, Austria to the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Fehm) Bauer and grew up under the German occupation during World War II. She met her future husband Bruce while he served in the US Army on occupation duty in Vienna. They were married in Vienna on July 18, 1947. Bruce preceded her in death on August 12, 1993. After marrying she and her husband moved to her husband’s parent’s farm near Gotts Corner in December of 1948. In 1958 they moved to their home on Sand Point. Gilda worked at the drive-in theater near Gotts Corner, at the Caseville State Bank as a cashier and as a telephone operator with General Telephone in Caseville. In 2009 she moved to an independent living facility in Marlette.

Virginia Deman, 85 died on Friday, December 5, 2014 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe . She was born May 8th, 1929, daughter of the late Anthony and Frances (Ornowski) Watchowski. She married William Joseph Deman on April 24, 1948 at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Dwight Township. He preceded her in death April 1, 2009. She was a member of the St. Edward Altar Sodality and Senior Citizens of Kinde. She was also a member of the Michigan Retired School Personnel, having been employed at North Huron Schools for 20 years. Virginia enjoyed travel and visiting with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

William was born on January 20, 1943 to the late Harry and Mary (Kuzminski) Lazechko in Detroit, Michigan. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church (St. Hubert Parish). Bill loved playing cards, listening to his beloved Detroit Tigers on the radio and spending time with his friends and family. He was a gentle soul and would help anyone in need. Some of his friends knew him as “Wild Bill”.

Biography

Dale H. Witzke age 91 of Bad Axe passed away peacefully Thursday morning, December 4, at Courtney Manor, Bad Axe. He was born November 9, 1923 at the home of his parents, the late Frederick and Tillie (Henkle) Witzke in Columbia Twp near Gagetown, where he grew up. He moved to Cleveland, OH, where he enlisted in the US Navy during WW II. He served in the South Pacific on the USS Houston nearly losing his life to Japanese torpedoes. The ship was able to make it back to New York City for repairs. He went out to sea on her one last time before he was discharged in 1946. While in Brooklyn, he met the love of his life, Ruth L. Krampf. They were married July 16, 1949 in Brooklyn. The couple moved to the Detroit area where Dale was employed at Ford Motor Company for 30 years, retiring in May of 1980 to their cottage in Lake Twp. that they owned since 1973. In 1996, they moved to a condo in Bad Axe. Dale was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Bad Axe. He enjoyed the out of doors, hunting, fishing and just riding his bicycle. Dale was very handy with his hands and tools and could be found most any time fixing or repairing something for himself or others.

Biography

Robert D. Baldwin age 87 of Elkton died Wednesday evening, December 3 at Huron County Medical Care Facility, Bad Axe. He was born October 19, 1926 in Windsor, Ontario to the late Arthur and Marianne (Smeaton) Baldwin. After graduating from Walkerville High School in Winsor he attended Ford Trade School and became a Wood Pattern Maker. On June 5, 1949, he was united in marriage to E. Margaret Price. After a few years with Ford in Windsor, he commuted to the GM Tech Center, Warren, eventually moving to Utica, where they raised their five daughters. He left GM twelve years later and worked in the small independent shops for a while and returning to GM for 8 more years, retiring in 1990 with 20 years of service. In 1978, Bob and Margaret moved to Almont and then to Florida after retiring. In 2001, they moved back to Michigan for health reasons and to Huron County in 2005 to be nearer his daughter Sheila. Margaret preceded him in death November 28, 2005. Bob was an avid sports fan, enjoying the Redwings, Tigers and Lions on TV. In his free time, he worked crossword puzzles. He loved working with wood and made beautiful jewelry boxes, earrings, bracelets, clocks and train whistles for his family.

Biography

Georgina Lillian (Toner) Running, age 90, of Bad Axe, passed away on Wednesday December 3, 2014 at the Huron Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. She was the youngest of three daughters born to William and Lula (Hall) Toner on January 23rd, 1924. The family lived in the Kinde area. The Toner girls attended several of the local country schools, making many friends along the way. Georgina married Robert Ernest Running on February 21st, 1942 in Ubly. The couple eventually settled on a piece of land near Bad Axe where they worked tirelessly to provide a meaningful and comfortable life for their family. Georgina was a woman of strong faith. As a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bad Axe, she was involved in many church activities throughout the years. Georgina loved music and dancing. She was a long time member of local dance clubs. She was blessed with a talent for quilting and needlework. She spent many hours with a needle and thread in hand.

Ethel M. Craig, age 82 of Chandler Twp, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Tuesday evening, December 2, surrounded by her family as she gained her heavenly wings to glory. She was born March 31, 1932 in Unionville, daughter of the late Lawrence and Margaret (Niedrich) Block. She graduated from Owendale High School in 1949. On April 1, 1950, she was United in marriage to Glenn A. Craig at the Kilmanagh Evangelical United Brethren Church and made their home on a farm in Chandler Twp near Souletown. Ethel was queen of her household; she mastered cooking baking and gardening. She enjoyed spending time outside in the yard; her passion was making her surroundings beautiful. Her Sundays were enjoyed first in church praising her Lord and then a huge dinner was served to family and or friends. Ethel sold Artez Liquid Embroidery products for many years and gained many titles while doing so. She was best at taking care of her family by being a mom first, an attentive wife and homemaker second.

Biography

Dennis E. O'Berski, 64, of Cass City, died unexpectedly Tuesday, December 2, 2014 in his home. He was born June 14, 1950 in Bad Axe to Elmer and Bernice (Masa) O'Berski. He married Anita Priscilla Scott January 31, 1976 in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Ubly. She died September 4, 2005. Dennis attended Ferris State College in Big Rapids. He worked for Saginaw Asphalt Paving Company as an Estimator and Project Manager retiring after over 40 years of service. Dennis was a member of St. Pancratius Catholic Church and the Cass City Gagetown Knights of Columbus Council #8892. He loved watching movies, going fishing and watching Detroit Tiger Baseball. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting and he also liked to play the piano a bit. Most important to Dennis was spending time with his family and friends.

Biography

Mrs. Florence Elizabeth Schrader, 87 of Ubly, passed away Tuesday morning, December 2, 2014 at her residence after a short battle with cancer with her daughter by her side while under hospice care. Florence was born on September 20, 1927 in Filion, MI to the late Stanley and Anna (Klert) Kologek. She married Frank (Bukowski) Brooks on July 10, 1948. On September 8, 1948 he was tragically killed in a plane crash. Florence married Gerald W. Schrader on October 26, 1949 in Ubly and they shared 52 wonderful years together before he preceded her in death on June 29, 2001. She was a 1945 graduate of Bad Axe High School. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ubly where she served as clerk of the session for 20 years, held the position of elder numerous times and was a member of the church choir. Florence and her husband, Gerald owned Ubly Tractor Sales, Inc. for 38 years and she was the bookkeeper for the business. Florence contributed her time and knowledge to her community in many different ways. She was elected Village Treasurer of Ubly and served as such for 34 consecutive years. She served the last three years on the village council and was recently elected to her second term. Most recently, she was presented with an outstanding achievement award in village government from Ubly Village’s President, Mark Brown. While village treasurer, Florence became involved with the Michigan Municipal League (MML) where she served as secretary, vice chair and the chair of MML Region V. She went on to serve on the MML Board of Trustees from 2003-2006. She was then appointed to the MML Foundation Board in 2006 to the present. Florence was initiated into the Ubly Miriam Chapter #214 Order of the Eastern Start in September of 1951. She held an office position every year, including serving as Worthy Matron 12 times and Office of Secretary for 25 years. She was a State Committee member in 1973-1974 and served as Grand chaplain from 1981-1982. She then became a member of the Villa Board of Control from 1984-2000. Florence held several Huron County and Thumb Association offices. She was a lifetime member of the Grand Chapter Order of Eastern State of MI and the Bay Chapter #219 of Bay City. Florence was a founding member of the Bingham Township Ambulance Service where she served as an EMT until the young age of 75. She spent many years serving on the ambulance with her son Larry and daughter Susan. She was EMT of the Year three times and held the offices of coordinator and treasurer. She was presented with the lifetime achievement award from Bingham Township Ambulance. In March of 2012, Florence was awarded a certificate of appreciation for ten years of honorable and faithful support from the National Law Enforcement Department. In her younger years, Florence was a member of the Ubly PTA and several other community organizations. She participated in the Ubly Alabama Jubilees. Florence was the co-author of the village of Ubly History Book and was awarded the community service award in August of 1996 during the 100th anniversary celebration for the Village of Ubly. She also volunteered at the Huron Medical Center for three and a half years until her health began to decline. Florence loved to travel and truly enjoyed driving across the country with her daughter Susan and their travel companion, Pixie. The trio visited 49 states, Canada and Mexico. While on a trip, Florence got to be a participant on The Price Is Right. She enjoyed bowling and was on the Stasia Fisher bowling team and made it to the State Bowling Finals. She also enjoyed fishing, reading, crossword puzzles, garage/estate sales and game shows. Florence loved attending all activities that included her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. One of Florence’s passions in life was time spent with her family. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her pride and joy.

Phyllis was united in marriage to Willet “Glenn” Coates. He preceded her in death on April 1, 1994. She lived in Detroit for 27 years before moving back to Kinde over 40 years ago. She attended the Kinde First Presbyterian Church. Her hobbies were crocheting, cooking, baking and spending time with her grandchildren. During her working career she was employed by Federal Security, K-Mart and the Bad Axe Seat Belt Plant.

Biography

DALE MAUSOLF, Sr., age 65 of Port Hope, passed away Monday, December 1, 2014, at St. Mary’s Medical Center of Saginaw. He was born on March 19, 1949 in Harbor Beach to Marian (Nowiski) Mausolf and the late Harry Mausolf. Dale and Audrey Gorrell were united in marriage on July 29, 1988 in Harbor Beach. Dale worked as a pipefitter for Tower Automotive for over 40 years. He was a member of the Huron Verona Masonic Lodge of Bad Axe. Dale was an avid gardener and beekeeper, he loved to hunt, fish, go camping, canning and baking, do woodworking and tinker with everything. Dale was always at the farmer markets in Port Austin and Harbor Beach selling his vegetables, Dale especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He graduated from Elkton Pigeon Bay Port High School in 1978. He married Annette Sznyr at St. Felix Catholic Church on May 8, 2004. Lou farmed with K-Two Farms. Eileen E. McGee age 69, Laker Schools Educator died Sunday afternoon, November 30, at Scheurer Hospital following a brief illness. She was born March 3, 1945 in Elkton at the home of her parents, the late Martin and Marie (Gelnaw) McGee and liv in Elkton her whole life. Eileen (affectionately called "Idy") was loved by all who knew her. Eileen served as a caring, dedicated, nurturing teacher, athletic director, coach and advisor at Laker Junior High for 33 years. She loved her many trips with 8th grade students to Washington DC. She also enjoyed golf, bowling, traveling, playing cards and tracing family heritage and history. Idy was involved as a volunteer at St Francis Borgia Catholic Church, Elkton Historical Society, Autumn Fest and Friends of Elkton. She was well versed on State and National politics and loved a spirited discussion with friends and family on most topics.

Florence Marie Hall Abssi, 95, of Houston, Texas, passed away from this life to the arms of our Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday afternoon, November 29th, after a long and valiant struggle with illness. Florence was born in Bad Axe, Michigan on July 26, 1919 to the Reverend Herbert Hall of Yorkshire, England and Mildred E. Jones Hall from Bad Axe, Michigan. She attended Sebewaing High School and graduated early at the age of 16. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and her Master’s degrees from Eastern Michigan University and the University of Texas. Florence was an accomplished violinist and performed at esteemed venues, such as Carnegie Hall. She was a member of the Teaneck Symphony in New Jersey and played with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic. She performed numerous times in Huron City for the famous author, critic, writer, and orator Rev. William Lyon Phelps. In the late 1930’s and early 1940’s, Florence sang with several big band orchestras including the Loren Towne Dance Band. Florence is a published author and has written several books, the first of which was set in the Bad Axe and Port Hope areas. Early in her career and during WWII, she worked at the Douglas Aircraft Company. After the war, she taught at elementary, junior high and high school in New Jersey, as well as Texas. However her passion was operating the several retail stores that she and her husband, Ali Abssi, established in the early 1960’s. These stores included the World Trade Center Imports and the Ishtar Gate Gallery, both located in Houston. The Ishtar Gate Gallery is still in operation today and has existed in the Galleria for 40 years. Florence was active in the many businesses and stores until she was incapacitated. Florence and Ali were also dealers in precious stones, fine art, jewelry, antiquities and real estate. Also, at an age when most people would have long since retired, she formed Texas State Land Exchange and several other companies. Florence was a trailblazer in every direction that life took her, age was truly just a number to her. Florence was an extensive world traveler, loved the thrill of a new adventure and loved people and their many cultures and foods. She could engage in conversations on any topic and was truly one of the brightest intellects of our time. She has beloved friends on every continent and many different countries. We will miss her engaging smile, her spellbinding stories, clever wit and sparkling personality. She truly lived life to the very fullest and most importantly, she was very loved by her family and friends. Florence loved to return to the “Thumb” to visit and attend class reunions or the Baker/Ramsey family reunions. It allowed her to return to the towns and areas that she so loved. She travelled the world and lived in different areas of Texas, Oklahoma, New York, New Jersey and New Mexico, but at heart she was always a Michigan girl and wanted to return there where so many of her beloved family have also been laid to rest.
