Biography

Betty Ann Schuetz, 89, of Caseville, died Sunday, May 11, 2014 in San Antonio, Texas while under hospice care at her son's home. Betty was born in Peru, Indiana on February 18, 1925 to the late Jacob and Mabel (Shadinger) Wagoner. She married Wilfred Schuetz on March 5, 1949 in Chicago. He preceded her in death on October 16, 1995. She raised her six children before returning to work as a Registered Nurse in psychiatric nursing, retiring as the Director of Nursing at Clinton Valley Center. She retired when her husband could no longer work due to WWII injuries and they moved to Caseville. She was a member of the Caseville United Methodist Church. In 2010 she moved to San Antiono, though she still spent as much time as she was able at her home in Caseville. She was a “master knitter.”

Biography

Thomas G. Dufty, 90, of Caseville, died Saturday, May 10, 2014 at his home after a long illness. Tom was born April 2, 1924 in Caseville, across the street from his present home, the son of the late Marguerite (McBride) Rogers and Thomas J. Dufty. He married Dorothy Hanna Naffien on January 30, 1954 in Bay Port. She preceded him in death on November 7, 1989. Tom enjoyed working on his grandfather’s farm (Joe McBride) as a youth until he enlisted in the 308th Airdrome SQ (which later became the Air Force) in November of 1945. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant on February 18, 1947. He then returned to Michigan and sailed the Great Lakes with his father and brothers as a merchant seaman until a violent storm on Lake Huron with 50 foot waves off Port Huron convinced him to become a carpenter. He went on to work for Meyers-Dufty Builders and R.T. Smith Builders for 39 years. He was a life member of the Pigeon VFW.

Biography

Gerald J. Diebel age 68, of Grant Twp. near Elkton tragically lost his life Thursday afternoon, May 9, when he fell from a barn roof while doing what he loved, helping a relative or friend. He was born September 6, 1945 in Bad Axe, the last of twelve children born to the late Henry and Viola (Rothfuss) Diebel. Jerry attended Laker High School, Class of 1963 and has lived in the Elkton area all his life. On July 3, 1965, he was united in marriage to Sharon T. Adams at the Elkton Evangelical United Brethren Church. They raised their family on a little farm south of Elkton. Jerry was a family man, he was in his glory when he had is family around, helping and making whatever they needed. He was an avid NASCAR fan; recording races that he couldn’t see live. In his earlier years, he was part of a pit crew at Owendale Speedway. Jerry also enjoyed camping and going to flea markets, as he could never pass up a good deal. He was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church and occasionally attended the Gagetown Church of the Nazarene with his daughter’s family.

Judith G. Janke, age 72, of Bad Axe, passed away on Friday, May 9th, 2014 at Hills and Dales General Hospital in Cass City. She was born on September 30th, 1941 in Saginaw, daughter of the late John and LaPerta (Baker) Schack. She married Kenneth Janke on June 10th, 1983 in Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. He preceded her in death on September 28th, 1992. Judith enjoyed drawing, painting, singing with a choir, and spending time with her loving family and friends.

Biography

Dale E. Havrilla, 87, of Caseville, died peacefully May 8, 2014 at his home while under hospice care. Dale was born July 10, 1926 in Detroit to the late Frederick and Frances (Walden) Havrilla. He graduated from Redford High School in 1944. He served in the US Navy during World War II on the USS Vulcan. On July 21, 1946 he married Beatrice W. Schultz in Detroit. She preceded him in death on February 25, 2005. In 1981 he retired from the GM Tech Center in Warren where we worked as a supervisor in paint research. Following retirement he moved to his home in Caseville on the Lake. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and a former member of the UAW Skilled Trades. He was a talented painter who’s work was featured on many commercial buildings and on the unlimited hydroplane boats that are raced in the Detroit River.

Robert C. Zmich, Age 80, passed away peacefully on Thursday, My 8, 2014 at his home with his family at his side following a brief illness. Robert was born in Tyre, Michigan on June 30, 1933 to the late Joseph and Agnes (Kulish) Zmich. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army sercing during the Korean War. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Sierra Club Life Member and the North American Hunting Club.

Helen Lorain Connors, age 85, of Bad Axe passed away on May 6, 2014 at her home at Country Gardens, surrounded by her family. Helen was born in Port Huron on March 10, 1929, the daughter of the late David and Amelia (Pabst) Weiss. She graduated from Port Huron High School in 1947 and attended Port Huron Community College. Helen worked at Chrysler until she married her husband, Mark J. Connors. They were united in marriage on September 3, 1949. After moving to Bad Axe, she was office manager at Leppick Distribution, continuing to work when Sharlands Distribution owned the business, and finally, Draves Distribution. Helen was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe, singing in the choir with her husband which she loved so much. She also enjoyed golfing with her husband, walking, working in her yard, cooking, knitting, traveling and spending time with her family. Helen will be remembered as a strong soul. Helen’s will to really live life will be respectfully remembered.

ORIN N. GAHLAU, age 78 of Port Hope, passed away Tuesday, May 06, 2014 at Courtney Manor Nursing Center of Bad Axe. He was born on January 29, 1936 in Detroit to the late Norman & Dorothy (Kraft) Gahlau. Orin and Arnette May were united in marriage on November 3, 1963 in Grosse Ile. He then went to school at Maple Grove Elementary and graduated from Utica High School Class of 1954. Orin retired from the US Navy in 1976 after 22 years of service, retiring as Chief Aerographer. Once they moved to Port Hope, he worked at Wilson Hardware from 1976 until 1982, and Heins Hardware from 1982 until 1988. Orin was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Port Hope. Orin served on the St. John Lutheran School Board of Education from 1979 til 1981, and was a St. John Finance Committee Member, was a member of TRIAD, was a corporate observer for the National Weather Service for 16.5 years, and was a lifetime member of the Fleet Reserve Association. His hobbies included gardening, golfing and reading. Orin was highlighted in the book “Beward the Hurricane” written by Terry Tucker.

MARGUERITE E. (WOODKE) DAVIS, age 82 of Port Hope, passed away on Monday, May 05, 2014 at Lakeview Extended Care and Rehab Center of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. She was born on November 4, 1931 to the late Alfred & Martha (Peppel) Woodke. She was united in marriage to Douglas Davis on November 25, 1950 at the Evangelica Reform Church in Port Hope. Marge attended country schools and then graduated from the Port Hope Community School in 1948. She worked for Michigan Bell Telephone in Detroit than became a stay at home mom when her son Kevin was born on August 6, 1957. After her son and daughter Cheryl were in school, she was employed by the Roseville Schools and retired from there after 25 years. After moving to Port Hope to their Retirement home she was very active with her husband.

Geraldine Mae (Suida) Zinger, 91, of Ruth, died on Monday evening, May 5, 2014 at Heritage Hill Assisted Living Facility in Caro. She was born May 3, 1923 in Harbor Beach, MI to David and Susie (Olshove) Suida. She was a graduate of Harbor Beach High School and Cleary School of Business, Ypsilanti, MI. She married Leo G. Zinger on November 24, 1944 at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic church in Harbor Beach. They celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary before Leo’s death in June, 2006. Geraldine was on the Board of Directors of Ruth State Bank for 43 years from 1971 to the present. She worked at the bank for thirty years alongside her husband, Leo from 1966 before she retired in 1996. They took great joy in each other’s company and were happiest together on the golf course, the dance floor, and at their winter residence in North Fort Myers , FL. Gerry was a parishioner at Holy Apostle Parish, Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth, where she was a member of the Christian Mothers. She was a member of the Verona Hills Country Club and enjoyed playing cards and traveling to various banking functions with Leo across the U.S. One of Gerry’s true passions in life was her hunger for knowledge of nutritional supplements and their holistic benefits. She was proud to be a true nutritional supplement aficionado.

Wayne R. Shaw, 52, of Bad Axe passed away peacefully on May 3, 2014 at his home in Wasilla, Alaska. Wayne was born on February 11, 1962 in Bad Axe to Donald and Judy (VanHevel) Shaw. Wayne married Martha Wilson on May 10, 1986 in Pinnebog. Wayne received his Bachelors of Engineering from Lawrence Tech in Southfield, Michigan. He was a civil engineer and worked for the Department of Defense for twenty-two years. Wayne enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, snowmobiling, and spending time with family and friends.

Shirley Marie Walsh, 77, of Port Austin, died Friday, May 2, 2014, at Troy Beaumont Hospital in Troy, Michigan. She was born on June, 23, 1936, the daughter of the late Leonard and Dorothy (Kirchoff) LaDouceur. She and John Richard Walsh were married by Fr. Joseph Schabel in St. Felix Catholic Church, Pinnebog on August 18, 1962. He preceded her in death on December 12, 2013. She was a member of St. Felix Catholic Church for 50 years. Shirley loved faming with her husband on their family farm. She was an avid quilter and loved gardening and canning. She loved the outdoors and particularly loved to golf.

Durrell "Bud" Steadman, age 89, of Bad Axe passed away on Friday, April 25, 2014 at Meadow Lanes in Bad Axe. He was born on August 12, 1924 in Sigel Township, son of the late Stanley and Grace (McKichan) Steadman. He married Neomia Wise on June 20 1964 in Bay Port MI. She preced him in death on October 20, 2010. Bud worked for GM Buick in Flint. He served in the US Army in Germany, receiving two silver stars. He also served in the Korean War as a paratrooper also receiving two silver starts. He was an avid hunter and a great shuffle-board player.

She has lived in Caseville permanently since 1992. She and her husband currently own and operate Shakers Ice Cream. She loved her family and her pets, especially doting on her grandchildren and anxiously awaiting the birth of her daughter’s baby in June.

Cindy L Farver age 57, of Elkton died Wednesday morning April 23, at Huron Medical Center following a long time battle with MS. She was born December 1, 1956 in Pigeon to the late Lee and Ruth (Proudfoot) Chappel. Cindy grew up near Pinnebog and was a 1974 graduate of Laker High School. On July 27, 1974, she was united in marriage to Brion B. Farver at the Pinnebog United Methodist Church. Cindy was a stay at home mother raising four children. She enjoyed gardening and being outdoors. She was an avid Detroit Tiger fan and especially loved having her grandchildren nearby.

Mrs. Georgeann T. Booms, 78 of Ubly and formerly of Minden City, passed away Saturday afternoon, April 19, 2014 at the Huron County Medical Care Facility. She was born on May 27, 1935 in Minden City to the late George and Agnes (Messing) Hessling. She married Gerald Booms on June 11, 1955 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. Georgeann was a graduate of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic School in Ruth. She worked on the family farm and was a bus driver for 37 years. She enjoyed trips to Branson, MO with her husband. She enjoyed quilting lap blankets for the area long term care facilities. She also enjoyed gardening and playing euchre. Georgeann truly cherished her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Pam graduated from Laker High School in 1974 and has lived in Huron County all her life. On November 25,1983, she was united in marriage to Fredrick Baur. He preceded her in death in 2008. Pam was a homemaker and housewife, she enjoyed doing picture puzzles, crossword and word find puzzles and following sprint car racing. She was an avid reader mostly western novels and watching westerns on TV.
