Genevieve was born on July 16, 1948 in Pigeon, MI to the late Bernard and Rosella (Balasz) Lesoski. She married Robert Burkett April 15, 1967. Genevieve loved watching the Red Wings, Tigers and Days of Our Lives. She enjoyed doing puzzles, playing card games, and scratching lotto tickets.

Shirley Sophia Hartlieb, 80, passed away July 16, 2014 in Bradenton, Florida. She was born November 12, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan to James and Florence (Hibbert) Pappas. She is preceded in death by her parents; her daughters, Gail Hartlieb and Kimberly Hayward; sister, Sophia Koustas; brother, Carl Pappas; brother-in-law, George Koustas; and son-in-law, Daniel Hayward. In Michigan, Shirley was a bookbinder journeywoman for a publishing company. She came from Warren, Michigan in 1980 to Manatee County, Florida where she was a member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. She was a worship assistant at her churches in both Michigan and Florida. She was a member of the Caseville, Michigan Eagles Auxiliary and enjoyed painting, boating and fishing.

Dora “Tiny” Grigg age 86, of Elkton went home to her Lord Tuesday morning, July15, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility, Bad Axe. She was born May 15, 1928, to the late Joseph and Sarah (Carriveau) Souva at their home in Meade Twp. near Pinnebog. On May 11, 1946, she was united in marriage to Loren R. Grigg at the Methodist parsonage in Pigeon. Loren preceded her in death January 31, 2005. Tiny worked for many years at the Elkton Dairy Bar, for a time at Knechtel’s Market and had been a cook/waitress at the Lunch Bucket. She then started her own restaurant; Tiny’s Kitchen at the west edge of Elkton and operated it until taking a position at the Laker Schools Cafeteria retiring in 2004. Dora attended the Community Wesleyan Church, Elkton United Methodist Church and was a member of the Elkton Historical Society. She loved playing golf, cards and bingo. She especially enjoyed cooking for large gatherings.

Alfred C, “Fergie” Jandreski, 82 of Port Austin died on Sunday, July 13, 2014 at the Huron County Medical Care Facility, Bad Axe. He was born on March 31, 1932, the son of Casmire and Celia (Goretski) Jandreski. He and Ruth “Judy” Ellen Shaddock were married on May 10, 1952 in St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Port Austin. He lived his entire life in the Port Austin area. Fergie began working as a line man for Port Hope telephone in 1956 and retired as a project engineer from Century telephone in 1993. He was a member of the K of C from 1959 to the present, a lifetime member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, and a member of the Usher’s Club for over 30 years. He attended Hellems grade school and graduated from Port Austin High School. Fergie was an avid Detroit Tiger Fan, who enjoyed fishing and playing cards. He loved to travel and spent his winters in Florida. He truly enjoyed spending time with his family.

Irene G. Marsa, 101, a former resident of Port Hope, Michigan, died July 13, 2014 in Carlsbad, California with her family by her side. Irene was born May 14, 1913 in South Haven, Michigan to Walter and Gertrude Harry. She was raised on an 80 acre farm with her siblings, John, Lowell, Louise and Ione, often growing their own food to survive during the lean years. She attended McDowell Country School and graduated South Haven High School in 1930. She attended Western Michigan University from 1930 to 1935 and received a BA in Education. Shortly thereafter, she began teaching at a consolidated school in Evart, Michigan. While attending a teacher’s mixer at Michigan State University, she met Lee A. Marsa, a fellow teacher. They wed on June 25, 1938 at her parent’s farm in South Haven. The couple then moved to their first home in St. Joseph, Michigan. Irene and Lee welcomed a daughter, Susan Lee, into the world on September 14, 1940. A son, Blaine Roy, followed a few years later on March 23, 1944. When Lee went to China as part of the UNRRA (United States Relief and Rehabilitation Administration) efforts in that country following World War II, Irene cared for her two young children alone until Lee returned. In 1948, the family moved to a 120-acre farm in Port Hope, Michigan, where they raised cattle and grain. Over the years, Irene and Lee expanded the successful farm to 240 acres. Irene resumed teaching at The Red School, a country school in Port Hope, and then accepted a position teaching 5th grade at Bad Axe Elementary School from which she retired in 1973. Lee passed away in 1980, after which Irene managed the farm until 2004. Irene was a volunteer at the Bad Axe Historical Society throughout the 1980s and 1990s, contributing to the success of events such as Log Cabin Days. She enjoyed traveling, visiting Hawaii, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Irene enjoyed spending time with her friends and family and was prolific in her correspondence with them. She loved going to the mailbox to send and receive letters almost every day. Irene moved to Rhinebeck, New York in 2004 to live with her daughter Susan and her family. In 2006, she relocated to the Brookdale Place in San Marcos, California, under the care of her son Blaine and his wife, Rita and their family.

George W. Baur, 98 of Bay Port, passed away Friday, July 11, 2014 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. He was born at home in McKinley Township, Huron County, on February 28, 1916, and was the son of William B. and Maude (Gwinn) Baur. George lived on the family farm all his life, and was the third-generation owning and operating the farm that first began in 1889. He actively operated it until his retirement in 1981. George attended Mud Creek Grade School and graduated from Bay Port High School in 1934. He married Esther Ittner of Auburn Michigan on June 6, 1942 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Beaver Township, Bay County, and she preceded him in death on January 28, 2012. George co-organized the Huron County Junior Farm Bureau, and was a Junior Farm Bureau Member. He was a Farm Bureau life member and Mud Creek community action group member. He was elected to the Huron County Farm Bureau Board of Directors, serving as secretary of the Board just before there was a county office building. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the Co-op Elevator and Oil Company, serving 13 years-nine years as president. George was a member of McKinley Township Board of Review, a member of the Pigeon Rotary Club, with a Paul Harris Fellowship of Rotary Foundation. He has served on Scheurer Hospital Board of Trustees, and is a member of the hospital Humanitarian Club. George was a member of Scenic Golf & Country Club for 20 years, and a life member of Hayes United Methodist Church. George enjoyed visiting with family members and friends around home as well as at Las Olas Beach Club at Satellite Beach, Florida.

Guadalupe V. Quiroga, 83 of Caseville, Michigan passed away peacefully on July 10, 2014 at Huron Medical Center. He was a resident of Courtney Manor. He was born on June 19, 1931 in Concepcion, Texas to the late Maurizio and Juanita (Villa) Quiroga. Guadalupe married the late Celestina Rodriguez in 1959. Our beloved mother. He then re-married Maria Carmona in May 1995. He was a resident of Caseville for 36 years. Guadalupe worked for Wallace Stone Plant in Bay Port for 36 years. He enjoyed fishing, barbequing and big time wrestling. Guadalupe mostly enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was a wonderful father who loved & enjoyed his children & grandchildren very much. He will be greatly missed by his children and all grandchildren.

Mr. Raymond Gibson, 81 of Ubly, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. Raymond was born on December 8, 1932 in Fairhaven, Vermont to the late Raymond B. Sr. and Elizabeth (Jones) Gibson. He married Louise Briolat on September 14, 1957 at St. John Catholic Church in Ubly. Ray attended St. Mary Catholic High School and was a graduate of Fairhaven High School, Fairhaven, Vermont. Ray served as a Marine is the Korean War. He received a Purple Heart, UN Service medal, Good Conduct medal, National Defense Service medal, Korean Service medal and a Silver Star medal. Ray was a member of the American Legion Post # 197 of Harbor Beach. He worked in sales and retired from Icon Paper Company in Detroit in 1998. Ray and Louise then moved to Ubly, but enjoyed travelling to Arizona and Florida. Ray was a member of the Ubly Community Club and Ubly Heights Golf and Country Club. He enjoyed fishing, reading and the tractor pulls at the Ubly Homecoming.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Pete “Mark” and Delores “Evelyn” Walsh ; paternal Floyd and Lucille Osentoski; three uncles, Randy Walsh, Robert Osentoski and Harry Osontoski, two aunts, Harriet Lamke & Marion Sopsich; two cousins, baby David Nichols and Ashley Walsh.
Troy was a 1992 graduate of Cass City High School. He attended Community College of Southern, NV. Troy’s passion was golf and it showed in his dedication for his high school team. He was very proud to have held the hole in one state record. He was a valued employee with Kiesub Electric for 15 years before he suffered a serious work related injury that he never fully recovered from. For the past three years, Troy fulfilled his life with his love of following all the Michigan sports teams.

Preceding her in death was her husband Ray in 1988 and her son, James in 1979.
She was born August 1, 1916 in Deckerville to the late Clyde and Frances (Hewett) Shupe. Theatta was a 1932 graduate of Bad Axe High School and received her degree in teaching from Taylor University, Upland, Indiana in 1937. That fall she began her teaching career at Owendale High School. Nine years later she went to the Bad Axe High School where she taught for three years. On January 26, 1946 she was united in marriage to Ray N. Picklo at the Colfax United Missionary Church. Theatta took time off from teaching to raise a family, then in 1961, she taught at the new Laker High School for 3 years before moving into the guidance counselor’s position, retiring in 1978. She was a member of the Elkton Missionary Church and enjoyed raising roses and gardening. In her free time she would read, knit, play cards and dominoes. Theatta had a very strong faith and demonstrated this faith through service to her church and missions, and through her ongoing outreach to others in the community.

Gale L VanBrande age 65 of Pinnebog formerly of Yale died Monday evening, July 7, at his home from multiple health problems. He was born May 11, 1949 in Port Huron to the late Leon and Nola (Cahoon) VanBrande. After high school he served in the US Navy for four years. On August 1, 1981 he was united in marriage to Brenda K. Baur at the Yale Methodist Church. They lived in Imlay City for eight years, then moved to Yale. Gale was employed with General Motors for over 27 years, retiring in 1995 for health reasons. In 2007, they moved to the Pinnebog area. Gale was the out of doors type, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, traveling, mostly to the U P and was a hobby farmer raising chickens, turkeys, etc. He was also a handyman mechanic always working on or building something.

In 1983, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Harbin in Fort Wayne, IN. Sandy lived near Gotts Corner until moving to Harlingen, TX in 1999, where she provided home health care services. She returned to Lake Twp. a week ago to be nearer family, because of her failing health. Sandy enjoyed and followed NASCAR circuit faithfully.

Shirley E. Hogan, 86, of Filion, MI died Friday, July 4, 2014 at Courtney Manor, Bad Axe, Michigan. She was born August 23, 1927, the daughter of Henry E. Clark and Elizabeth “Daniels” Clark in Detroit, Michigan. She and Walter “Bud” Hogan were married on August 24, 1945 in St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Redford, Michigan. He preceded her in death on June 1, 1997. Shirley was a member and vestry member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Bad Axe. She was a past member of Pinnebog Child Study Club and Riverdale School PTA. Shirley worked at Little’s “Children’s” Clothing Store and Detroit Lenders Clearing House. Shirley enjoyed being a mother, grandmother and sister and loved spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed crocheting doilies and afghans; knitting; flower gardening; sewing & canning. She also loved to travel, visit on the phone and go to TOPPS meetings.

Mr. Frank J. Particka, 81 of Ubly, passed away Friday, July 4, 2014 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was born on November 21, 1932 in Detroit to the late Frank M. and Anna (Goniwicha) Particka. He married Phyllis Sample on October 1, 1960 with whom he had seven children. He then married Donna Hill in Bad Axe in November of 1999. Mr. Particka attended Frieburg County School and Ubly Community School. He served in the Marine Corp from 1954 until 1957. He then farmed the family farm for over 30 years. He worked as a builder, on road construction and finally retired from Gemini Plastics in 2011 after 20 years employment. His true love was searching for treasures, whether at an auction sale or just on the side of the road.

She was preceded in death by her sons, James and Robert; sisters, Esther Cochrane, Mildred Polley, and Aldine Voss; and brothers, Owen and Kenneth Wissner.
In her younger years, Vernita worked at the Owendale Hotel. She then worked for J.P. Burroughs at the Bach Elevator and in the Elkton office, retiring at age 72. She enjoyed making rag rugs with her loom and spending time with her family. She often worked in her yard. Vernita was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Linkville (Pigeon), where she helped with the preparation and mailing of the church newsletter and taught Sunday School in her earlier years. She was also a member of the Ladies Aid.

Louisa Jane Williams, age 85, of Port Austin, passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. She was born on December 30, 1928 in Port Hope. She married Frederick S. Williams on August 12, 1983 in Bad Axe. He preceded her in death on December 5, 2001. "Jane" was a member of the Ladies Axillary of the American Legion in Port Austin.

Marv is survived by eight great-grandchildren – Ethan and Aiden Mausolf, Isabella and Kiptyn Sherman, Jaxon Mausolf, Harper Champagne, Marshall Mausolf, and Kailey Bischer. Marv is also survived by siblings – Collette Grekowicz, Charlotte (Leon) Baker, Don (Arley) Mausolf, Elaine (Pete) Scherba, Jean (Ron) Armstrong, Sharon (Jim) Schornack, Warren (Jackie) Mausolf; and his sister-in-law, Marie Mausolf. Marv is also survived by several brother- and sister-in-laws. Marv was preceded in death by his daughter – Donna Thomas, his brother - Orville Mausolf, his sister – Doreen Wruble, and his brother-in-law – Bill Grekowicz.
Marvin J. Mausolf, 81, of Harbor Beach, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 1, 2014. He was born on July 22, 1932 to Joseph and Mayme (Kramer) Mausolf. Marv served in the Korean War from 1954-1956. He met the love of his life, Marlene Booms, in 1956. They later married at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ruth in 1957. Marv spent his working years at Malloy Manufacturing in Detroit, Booms Silo, and for the Huron County Road Commission. After his retirement in 1994, Marv spent his time hauling beets for Schornack Farms and Bischer Farms and driving fertilizer truck for Crop Production Services. Marv was an avid gardener; he was especially excited to plant his radishes and peas as early as possible. He enjoyed doing yard work, specifically mowing the lawn. Marv took pleasure in fox hunting and fishing, particularly with his children. He enjoyed attending sporting events, especially when he had the chance to watch his grandchildren play. Marv was a fan of the Tigers and the Pistons, and watched the games as often as possible. He passed the time doing his “homework”, which were his word searches. Most recently he enjoyed bingo.
