Born in Pigeon on September 27, 1937, she was the daughter of the late James Joy and Amanda (Buchholz) Richmond. Shirley retired after working as a purchasing agent for more than 25 years at Hills & Dales Hospital in Cass City. She attended Cross Lutheran Church when living in Pigeon, and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church when in Cass City.

Frank Lynch Sr., age 76 of Harbor Beach, passed away Thursday, August 14, 2014 at Harbor Beach Community Hospital. He was born on October 25, 1937 in Detroit to the late Fran and Doris (Music) Lynch. Frank and Elaine Gabriel were united in marriage on August 3, 1968 in Mt. Clemens. Frank was the owner/operator of Frank’s Place in White Rock for 45 years. He was a former member of the Thumb Steelheaders Chapter. Frank enjoyed repaired outboard engines, visiting the casinos and playing on the computer.

Biography

Mrs. Judith “Judy” Harrington, 67 of Ubly, passed away Wednesday morning, August 13, 2014 at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. Judy was born on August 6, 1947 in Detroit to the late George and Joan (Pekarchik) MacDonald. She married David G. Harrington on November 7, 1973 n Detroit. He preceded her in death on May 17, 2007. Judy was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Detroit. She worked at various companies in the Mt. Clemens area before moving to Ubly in 1983. Judy and her husband owned Ubly Welding, Ltd. for 17 years. She was very proud of her service in the US Navy and was a member of the American Legion for 16 years. She was lovingly known by the children of the community as “Grandma Judy” and was a member of the Foster Grandparent Program for 7 years. She was a member of Good Shepherd Parish, St. John Catholic Church in Ubly where she was a choir member, a Christian Mother, a Eucharistic minister, and Religious Education teacher. She also helped out with the Community Vacation Bible School. Judy was very dedicated to her faith and led a rosary service every Monday on her back porch for all to attend. Judy enjoyed being a crossing guard for many years as it gave her more time to see the children of the community. She was a member of the Ubly Community Club for many years. Judy was extremely proud of her Scottish heritage. One of her passions in life was music, especially playing her violin.

She married Stanley Hinton. He preceded her in death in April of 1985. Sophie was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Bad Axe, where she enjoyed serving on various committees and taking part in the various activities of the church. She was a lifetime member of Verona Hills Golf Club, where she has won several club championships.

Bruce H. Gilbert age 84 of Chandler Township, MI died Sunday morning, August 10, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility, Bad Axe, MI. He was born January 19, 1930 at the home of his parents, the late William and Lila (Inman) Gilbert in Chandler Township. Bruce was a milk hauler and farmed until 1954, when he was inducted into the US Army. When he returned home in 1956, he continued farming until retiring in 1994. On August 17, 1957, he was united in marriage to Alice B. Block at the Kilmanagh Evangelical United Brethren Church. Bruce attended the Bad Axe Free Methodist Church and enjoyed deer and pheasant hunting and spent his winter’s ice fishing.

Dean A. Rasmussen, 52, of Cass City, MI died following a short illness Sunday, August 10, 2014 in St. Mary's Medical Center, Saginaw, MI. He was born February 24, 1962, in Cass City, MI the seventh child of eight born to Kenneth James and Maureen Jeanette (Graves) Rasmussen. He married JoAnn Marie Prokopenko September 22, 1990 in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Unionville, MI. Dean graduated in 1980 from USA High School, MI. Since the age of 16 Dean has been working for the family business, Rasmussen Transport Inc. The business was started by his father in 1952. Dean currently worked as Manager. Dean enjoyed hunting especially turkey and deer, fishing and boating. His children were a very important part of his life. Dean attended all of their sports activities and was very proud of each of them.

Gertrude Elsie Marie Stecker, age 92, of Midland, MI formerly of Sebewaing,MI passed away peacefully on August 9, 2014. She was born July 18, 1922 in Pigeon,MI the daughter of the late Frederick and Marie (Bergman) Licht. She grew up on the family farm near Pigeon. She was confirmed at Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon and graduated from Elkton High School. On May 12, 1956, she was united in marriage to David E. Stecker at Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon. He preceded her in death on February 15, 1991. Along with being a homemaker and partner to her husband in farming, Gertrude worked at Scheurer Hospital for many years. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and had been active in Mary-Martha Guild, Ladies’ Aid, LWML, and Altar Guild.

Donna M. Gunsell age 82 of Owendale passed away Thursday morning, August 7, at Mid-Michigan Medical Center, Midland. She was born August 15, 1931 in Sebewaing Twp. to the late William and Christina (Gabriel) Elsesser. On April 23, 1966, she was united in marriage to Donald F. Gunsell at the Methodist Church in Sebewaing and made their home in Owendale. Donald preceded her in death May 26, 1975. Donna had been employed for 25 years at Automotive Industries in Owendale until they closed, then at General Cable, Cass City two years, and retired from Voltron, Bad Axe in 1999 with five years of service. She was a former member of Faith Gospel Church and in retirement, Donna enjoyed gardening especially flowers and cooking for her family.

Biography

Katie (Kathy) was born September 29, 1954 to James and Theresa (Grifka) Taylor in Deckerville, Michigan. She married the love of her life, Randy Stomack, on March 30, 1974. The two of them celebrated their 40 wedding anniversary in March. Katie attended Ubly High School. She had a long career working for local dentists: Doctor’s Veryser, Brown, Fucinari and Paganini. For the last 16 years she has worked in quality control for Gemini Plastics. Katie was a kindhearted, devoted and loving mother to her only child Chris and daughter by marriage and heart, Brenda. Katie was an amazing Neena to her granddaughters McKenzie and Addison. She was a surrogate mother to nephews and niece (Kayleigh, Nicholas and Justin) who held a special place in her heart. She enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her family. She touched many people through the years and will be missed by all who knew her well. Katie was a devoted Catholic and very comfortable with her love for our Lord and Savior. She was a parishioner of Good Shepard Catholic Church, serving in leadership roles on the Parish Council, Christian Mothers, Eucharistic Minister, Leader, the annual bazaar and conducing prayers services for deceased parishioners. Her hobbies included ceramics, gardening, reading and horticulture.

Mardell was born on January 31, 1931 in Brookfield Twp., MI to Orville and Marie (Bahrns) Brown. On April 26, 1964 she married Donald Volz at Kilmanagh United Methodist Church. He passed away December 10, 1998. Mardell liked to entertain her cousins from Illinois and Canada. She enjoyed listening to Don's favorite song "Never Ending Love for You." She also enjoyed listening to the music of Johnny Cash and polka music. She would never admit it, but she enjoyed listening to her daughter's alternative music. She liked working on the lawn and going to Eastern Market on flower day. She enjoyed the sweet treat of cinnamon rolls from "Zingermans". She just got over her shyness of animals and loved a little kitten named "Cutie". She liked training on the elliptical with hopes of taking a one mile walk. She had a firm Christian faith of reading the Bible and praying and meditating every day. She also enjoyed making deviled eggs and church window treates. She was a member of the Moose Lodge.

Mr. Lawrence Adolph “Peanuts” Vogel, 75 of Minden City, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, August 3, 2014 at his residence. Lawrence was born on August 10, 1938 in Minden City to the late Adolph and Adella (Messing) Vogel. He married Florence Patricia Kubacki on April 29, 1961 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Smith Corners. Lawrence was a graduate of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic High School. He farmed for all of his life. Lawrence was a lifelong parishioner at Holy Apostle Parish, Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Ruth where he was a member for 23 years of the ushers club and the Knights of Columbus Council #3823. He was also a member of the National Farmers Organization for 43 years. Lawrence enjoyed woodworking, hunting, slow pitch softball, gardening, doing puzzle books, playing cards and horse shoes.

Biography

He was born November 7, 1949 in Bad Axe to Marie (Kirk) Eby and the late Edwin “Ted” Eby. Jerry grew up on the Eby farm at the south limits of Elkton and was a 1967 graduate of Laker High School. One month later in July of 1967, he joined the US Navy and served in Vietnam as a Corpsman attached to the Marine Corp, Mike Co, 3rd Marine Div, 3rd Battalion, known as Mike 3/3. On September 30, 1967, while home on leave after basic training, he was united in marriage to Iola Hewitt at the Elkton Missionary Church. When he returned home, he began working at Sebewaing Industries, in 2002, he retired with 32 years of service. Jerry was a member of the Elkton VFW and enjoyed wood working, maintaining his yard, especially enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons and going to his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Ennis A. Haley, age 60 of Bad Axe passed away Thursday, July 31, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility (HCMCF), Bad Axe. He was born June 15, 1954 in Bad Axe to the late Aaron and Evelyn (Schember) Haley. After high school “Lakers, Class of 72”, Ennis served in the US Army for 2 years, stationed in Germany. After his army service, he was employed at Sebewaing Industries until an automobile accident on February 14, 1974 totally incapacitated him. He has made his home at HCMCF since September of 1974. He loved his support staff at HCMCF, blondes, motorcycles, auto racing, cartoons and sports on TV. Ennis was a member of the Community in Christ Church, Owendale.

Thomas Harold Rose, 84, of Caseville, died Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at his home while under hospice care. Tom was born July 21, 1930 in Detroit to the late Harold and Lillian (Scheider) Rose. He graduated from Detroit Denby High School in 1949 and Michigan State University in 1954. He served in the US Army from 1954 to 1956. He married Sandra Cork on September 14, 1992 at Calvary Baptist Church in Caseville. After leaving the army Tom began a 30 year teaching career in Saginaw Public Schools, retiring in 1986. After retirement he moved from Saginaw to Caseville. He was a former member of the Caseville Village Council and a current member of the Caseville Eagles Club. He enjoyed golf, puttering around the house and yard, traveling, and spending the winter in Arizona

LeRoy Harold Beitz, age 83, of Sebewaing, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2014 at McLaren Bay Region in Bay City. LeRoy was born in Unionville on April 10, 1931 to the late Clayton and Lucille (Abke) Beitz. He enjoyed being a teacher for close to 50 years. He began his career in several country schools, Sebewaing Schools and for USA Schools. He also taught drivers education. He loved farming and had a huge passion for reading. He enjoyed being outdoors, flower gardening, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, motor cycle riding, cooking and playing the organ. He is also a past Lions Club member.

Kenneth J. McDonald, age 95, well known resident and business man of Bad Axe, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2014 at Huron Medical Center, Bad Axe. Ken was born August 9, 1918 in Lincoln Township to the late Donald and Violet (Christie) McDonald. Kenneth and Mildred Kirkpatrick were united in marriage on October 10, 1940 in Marlette. She preceded him in death August 18, 1989. He attended the Bad Axe Free Methodist Church. He was a World War II veteran in the United States Army and served during the Battle of the Bulge as an Infantryman. Ken was a member of the antique car club and enjoyed attending the shows when he could. He was a member of the Bad Axe Rotary Club, liked to golf, travel, especially to Florida, and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He began his grocery career at A & P in Detroit. After being discharged from the army he moved to Bad Axe and started the meat locker plant. Then he worked for IGA Progressive Warehouse. Ken then started grocery stores in Essexville, Marlette and Elkton. In 1954 he opened McDonald’s IGA (currently McDonald Food and Family Center) in Bad Axe.

Mr. George T. Essenmacher, 72 of Birch Run, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at his residence. George was born on January 17, 1942 in Dearborn to the late George H. and Agnes (Koss) Essenmacher. He married Josephine Rutkowski on September 18, 1965 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. George was a graduate of Our Lady of Lake Huron High School. He enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in Germany for over two and a half years before he was honorably discharged. George worked for the Buick Motor Division of General Motors for over 44 years before retiring in 2009.

Louise Helen Walsh, 89 of Ubly passed away on July 22, 2014 at St. Mary's Hospital of Saginaw, with family by her side. Louise was born May 4 1925 in Battle Creek, Michigan to the late Harry R. and Vesta L. (Benfer) Sackett. She married Raymond W. Walsh on July 5, 1947 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Battle Creek. Together, they made their home in Ubly, Michigan; raised nine children; and were parishioners at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Good Shepherd Parish, Frieburg. Louise enjoyed reading, puzzle books, playing cards and the piano, quilting, gardening, watching soap operas, listening to old time country and gospel music, church socials, and countryside drives. She especially took pleasure in the good company of her family and friends.

Mary married Edwin Korn on April 19, 1958 at St. Edward’s Church in Kinde. She graduated from Kinde High School in 1956, and then attended Central Michigan University for one year. Mary was an art teacher and teacher’s aide at Port Austin Public Schools, owned a gift shop, worked for Osentoski Reality, was the treasurer for Port Austin village, and a treasurer/secretary for the Port Austin Fire Department. She was a member of the Jr. Priscilla Club and enjoyed traveling and golfing.
