Biography

Anna M. Wisniewski, 87, of Caseville, passed away at home while under hospice care on Monday, March 25, 2013 surrounded by her family. She was born March 13, 1926 in Detroit to late John and Florence Radtke. On October 26, 1946 she married Carl H. Wisniewski in Detroit. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She was a homemaker and baked and decorated wedding cakes. After retirement she moved to Caseville and enjoyed traveling to visit her family.

Biography

Erma Laura Swartzendruber, age 99 of Pigeon, passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. She was born October 20, 1913 in Centralia, Missouri, the daughter of Henry A. and Barbara (Guengerich) Yoder. She grew up in Parnell, Iowa and attended West Union Mennonite Church, where she was united in marriage to Glenn Swartzendruber on December 18, 1938. The couple moved to Pigeon where Glenn farmed and was a dairyman and beekeeper. The couple had been married 68 years when Glenn passed away on May 2, 2007. Erma was a homemaker, wonderful cook, and fine seamstress and quilter. She donated many quilts over the years to the Michigan Relief Sale in Fairview. She also helped the Pigeon River quilters work on a quilt for Paul Harvey. She was an avid reader. Erma loved gardening and was always sending away for new varieties of seeds. She was a helpmate to Glenn on the farm, milking cows, driving tractor, and extracting honey from the beehives. She was the oldest member of Pigeon River Mennonite Church, Pigeon. Short in stature, Erma rose above everything and was “big” in heart with love for her Lord, her friends, and especially for her family.

WILLET O. FRIEDLAND, age 76 of Port Hope, passed away Thursday, March 28, 2013 at Huron Medical Center of Bad Axe. Willet was born on May 23, 1936 in Port Hope to the late Otto and Agnes (Hartz) Friedland. He and Joyce Green were united in marriage on November 1, 1958 in Port Hope. Willet worked for McEachin Excavating in Deckerville for 23 years, he also worked in Construction and Unell Manufacturing. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, and loved riding his Harley Davidson Motorcycle. You never saw Willet without a smile on his face!

James Angus Sweeney, 75 of Ubly passed away suddenly Thursday, March 28, 2013 at the Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe while under hospice care He was born on June 27, 1937 in Ubly, son of the late Angus and Abina (Garety) Sweeney. He was united in marriage to Kathryn “Kay” R. Tschirhart on August 28, 1965 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. Jim was a dairy farmer until an auto accident left him blind 1990. He was a 1955 graduate of Ubly High School and attended Michigan State University. In his younger years, Jim was a member and drummer of the Guza Trio polka band and was very proud to be an Irishman in a polka band. He was a past officer, delegate and Outstanding Young Dairy Couple chairman with MMPA and a former trustee for Sheridan Township. Jim was a very active lifelong member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church where he was a Eucharistic Minister, usher and dedicated worker at the annual parish chicken barbeques.

Stanley J. Pobanz, age 88 of Owendale, passed away Sunday, March 31, 2013 at the Bay County Medical Care Facility in Bay City. Stanley was born September 25, 1924 on the family farm in Brookfield Township to John and Mae (Gregor) Pobanz. He graduated from Owendale High School in 1943. On September 17, 1949 he was united in marriage to Betty Mae Finkbeiner in Kilmanagh. The couple had been married more than 50 years when she passed away on October 10, 2001. Stanley was a farmer throughout his lifetime. He owned and operated Thumb Livestock Supplies and was a dairy cow breeder from 1961 until his retirement. He then became a hobbyest apple orchard owner. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and a life member of the Cass City F & AM. Stanley was a member of the Kilmanagh United Methodist Church. He was the last remaining member of his siblings.

Donald R. Deering age 80 of Grant Twp. near Elkton died Monday evening, April 1, at Covenant Cooper, Saginaw. He was born September 20, 1932 in Oliver Twp. to the late Jacob and Katherine (Frank) Deering Sr. Don served his country in the US Army during the Korean War, returning home in June of 1956. On June 27, 1959, he was united in marriage to Doris M. Dewald at St. John’s Lutheran Church, AuGres. Don lived and farmed in Grant Twp. all his married life. After retiring in 1996, Don spent much of his free time restoring antique farm machinery. He was member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Bad Axe.

Irene A. Gorney, age 93, of Bad Axe, passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. She was born on June 11, 1919 in Sand Beach Township, near Harbor Beach, daughter of the late Alex and Anna (Grates) Talaski. She married Harry J. Gorney of February 14, 1938 in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rapson. He preceded her in death on May 10, 2004. Irene and Harry were longtime Sigel Township farmers. They moved to Bad Axe following their retirement in 1979. Irene enjoyed being a seamstress, homemaking, and mothering her family.

Joy Ann Hunt-Guza, age 86, of Verona Township, passed away on Monday, April 8, 2013 at the home of her daughter, following an extended illness. She was born on May 18, 1926 in Highland Park, Mi, daughter of the late Vernon Paul and Edna Marie (Schweigert) Hess. She married John Warren Hunt on July 29, 1944 in Royal Oak, Mi. He preceded her in death on January 26, 1986. She married John E. Guza on April 21, 1995 in Bad Axe, Mi. He preceded her in death on December 4, 2012 Joy Ann was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe. She was a retired nurse from Huron Memorial Hospital. She was an avid knitter and enjoyed tap dancing, cookbooks and spending time with her family and many friends.

She and Steven Wrubel were united in marriage on September 28, 1929, in Ubly, Michigan. Victoria was a member of St. Vincent DePaul in Florida, she was also a member of The Daughters of Isabella for 25 years. She enjoyed dancing with the love of her life Steven for 83 years. They belonged to the Polish American Club in Holiday, Florida. She loved to travel with her husband going on multiple cruises all over the world and spent her free time playing Pinochle and Euchre. She loved visting with family and friends all over the United States especially Michigan, Arizona, Florida, and California.

Biography

Edward Brklacich, age 82, of Sebewaing, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, April 9, 2013, with his family by his side at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. He was born November 21, 1930 to Marco and Mary (Zanich) Brklacich in Detroit. Edward is a Central Michigan University Alumni. He worked as a teacher at Carleton Airport Schools, Sebewaing High School and USA Schools. He also was a coach, Athletic Director, opened his own frame shop and founder of Great Lakes Maritime Museum. He was a member of the Elks Club, Trinity United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men’s club. He enjoyed woodworking, playing softball, golfing and bowling.

Biography

Mrs. Gloria M. McCoy, 90 of Minden City, passed away Tuesday morning, April 9, 2013 surrounded by her family at her home while under hospice care. Gloria was born on January 30, 1923 in Detroit to the late Herbert P and Magdalene (Cook) Schock. She married Joseph L. McCoy on December 21, 1940 at St. Mary Cathedral in Saginaw. Gloria was a graduate of Deckerville High School. She was a lifelong parishioner at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth where she was a member of the Christian Mothers. Gloria was an accomplished pianist and avid bowler. She loved to travel, read and play euchre and Scrabble. She was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers and she never missed a game. Gloria truly enjoyed spending time with her beloved family.

Biography

Tom attended the Grace School in Paris Township and was a 1952 graduate of Ubly High School. He served in the US Army from 1957-1959. He was a lifelong parishioner at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville where he was a member of the St. Mary Men’s club and former member of the picnic committee. Before he retired, Tom farmed his whole life. He enjoyed working in his shop fabricating just about anything. He also enjoyed fishing trips with his friends, trips to the casinos and polka music. He truly enjoyed playing euchre with his buddies from Parisville and his buddies from Ruth at the “House of Knowledge”.

Biography

August Abraham Jr., 98 of Minden City, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2013 at his daughter’s home. He was born on August 17, 1914 at home in Parisville, son of the late August E. and Otylia (Uller) Abraham. He married his sweetie, Agnes Lemanski on June 15, 1946 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. They spent 65 amazing years together before Agnes preceded him in death on February 29, 2012. August attended the MacMillian Country School. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Parisville. He served in the US Army Air Corp and was a member of the American Legion Harbor Beach Post #197. August was a farmer and professional truck driver most of his life. He milked cows and hauled cattle until he was 90 years young. He owned and operated two canned milk routes. He hauled wood, beets, stone, cream, butter, fertilizer from Saginaw and coal from Unionville to Minden City. August was employed at the saw mill and Nestle Co., both of Ubly. He bailed hay, both stationary and custom. He white washed barns and ran a steam engine to thrash grain. He truly enjoyed gardening. He had a love for animals, but his passion was living life to its fullest.

Clarabelle Kobylski, age 90 of Caseville, passed away Monday, April 15, 2013 at Laurels of Carson City. Born in Caseville on July 23, 1922, she was the daughter of the late William and Myrtle (Dufty) Robinson, and graduated from Pigeon High School. On September 1, 1945 she was united in marriage to Edward Kobylski in Detroit. He preceded her in death on April 16, 1997. Clarabelle worked for Caseville Public Schools as custodian and worked for many years as secretary for George and Jeanette Beadle at Beadle Bay properties. She was a member of Caseville United Methodist Church.

Yvonne G. Ball, age 68, of Sebewaing, went to be with her Lord and Savior peacefully, Tuesday, April 16, 2013, surrounded by her loving family. Although saddened, we rejoice in Yvonne’s new and perfect life. Yvonne was born January 17, 1945 in Bad Axe to John Albert Weeks and Grace Marie (Kuhl) Weeks. She was a member of Rotary Club International in Sebewaing, Kiwanis Club in Caseville, former board member at Christ the King School, member of the Eagles Club, and member at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. She retired from Independent Bank in Sebewaing as a bank manager. She worked as the church secretary for Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Caseville for the last two years. She enjoyed painting, sewing, traveling, playing mahjong, reading, cooking, playing the violin and piano, and spending time with her loving family.

Biography

Lois L. Chisholm age 86 of Pigeon, died Tuesday evening, April 16, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Saginaw, MI. She was born November 13, 1926, at the home of her parents, the late James and Grace (Bradd) Smith in McKinley Township. On March 13, 1953, she was united in marriage to Frederick J. Chisholm at Hayes United Methodist Church. Together with her husband, with whom she recently celebrated 60 years of marriage, lived and raised their family in Pigeon. Lois worked as an operator for Michigan Bell, worked for Firestone Corporation and at Hamill Manufacturing, Bad Axe, MI, prior to her retirement. She was a member of Cross Lutheran Church. She enjoyed china painting, learning the art and studying with the renowned Gladys Galloway. Lois taught china painting classes to many people in the thumb area. Her home was opened to many foreign exchange students from 1960 – 1982 from countries including the Middle East, Asia and Scandinavia some of whom attended or graduated from Laker High School. She also enjoyed sewing and cooking and teaching these hobbies to local 4H students.

Born in Sinton, Texas on January 31, 1955, he was the son of Desiderio and Eusebia (Garses) Sanchez. He graduated in 1973 from Laker High School. On July 13, 1981 he was united in marriage to Keri E. Sprague in Ohio. Ray worked at General Cables and Darins Handyman & Construction. He loved spending time with his family and was an avid sports fan. He was a member at Bay Port United Methodist Church.

Helen M. Foy Decker, age 86 of Pigeon, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon. Born in Saline, Michigan on August 8, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Selma (Miller) Steudle. On June 29, 1946 she and Raymond L. Foy were united in marriage in Warren. He died August 20, 1996. On November 30, 2002 she was married to Richard Decker in Pigeon, and he passed away May 27, 2008. During the 1960’s, Helen worked as a secretary with her husband Ray, in his business, Statewide Caulking. She then worked as a secretary at Center Line Public Schools until her retirement. She enjoyed gardening and flowers, especially her roses. She played cards, worked crossword puzzles, and had music playing in her home all the time. She especially loved spending time with her family at the lake, swimming and watching sunsets. Helen was an active, faithful member of Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon.
