Saturday morning just after 9, emergency personnel were called to 8576 Crescent Beach Road, after a dog was found by nearby residents out on unstable ice on Saginaw Bay about 200 feet from shore. Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson said the cocker spaniel type dog, whose owner was unknown, appeared to be wandering in circles and not coming back to shore. The Caseville Fire Department was called out with ice rescue gear and a fireman suited up and retrieved the dog, while being tethered to fellow firemen. The dog was rescued without incident and was taken to the Caseville Animal Clinic to be checked as well as an attempt to find the own. A chip implanted in the dog identified it as being from the Flint area, but the contact number had been disconnected. The dog went to the Thumb Animal Shelter in Elkton, and was posted on social media as found. About an hour and a half later the owner called the shelter to pick up her dog. Deputy Matt Clark learned that the dog's 60 year old owner from Lapeer was visiting relatives about a half mile from where the dog was found. It apparently had gotten out early that morning, while she and others staying in the house were unaware. It was also learned that the nearly 16 year old dog named Dolly had very bad eyesight and struggled with hearing. The owner was grateful to all involved in getting her dog back to her. Hanson said dog owners are urged to update any addresses and pertinent information to records such as dog licenses and devices that can help find their owners in emergency situations.
