On Wednesday Afternoon, Michigan State Senator Dan Lauwers spoke to Peppermill Restaurant owner Tom McCollum, as well as constituents.
In an interview with McCollum, he and McCollum talked about the impact of the MDHHS Orders on restaurant owners. McCollum said last month, he had lost money for the first time since owning his business.
He has also attempted curbside take-out, which only accounted for 5% of total sales.
Lauwers was asked about contacting Governor Gretchen Whitmer regarding funding for businesses, as Whitmer had reached out multiple times to the legislature.
"Multiple times. The Governor has not been on the Senate Floor since she took office, which is a first. We have taken consistent action to reach out, and it's disheartening when we either aren't approached or denied action."
He was also asked about future action between legislation and Whitmer.
"Two things. First, we need to look at what's allowed in the Executive Branch. 'Unlock Michigan' was an effort to enact Emergency Laws within our legislation, and it was approved by the Michigan Supreme Court. We need to critically look at these laws again, and take action as needed. Also, Licensing. As people, we have personal responsibilities, and make personal decisions. For example, Is it OK for me to go to a Barber Shop? Is this place approved by the appropriate association? We need to critically look at these things looking forward, in case something like this happens again."
