The Harbor Beach School Board called a Special Meeting to Order Thursday evening. The main topics on the agenda were COVID-19 and a bond vote, which was scheduled for May.
Superintendent Shawn Bishop had his board practice "Social Distancing", as each board member was approximately 6 feet away from one another, as seen in the video below.
Business that was addressed was whether or not the closure due to COVID-19 will extend the school year. At this point, Governor Whitmer has not made a ruling on this.
The MHSAA has also ruled that there will be no practices or coordination with Winter Sports or Spring Sports teams at this time.
Also, the Meals for Students program has been a success thus far. Bishop and the board thanked Kathy Cook, staff and the Thumb Area Transit for providing meals for hungry children who are looking for meals during the school closure.
Other business that was finalized was continued pay for Hourly Employees, a matter that could be re-visited after April 6th. The school is offering supplemental instruction online, but it will not affect current letter grades at this time. Also, the vote on the 2020 Harbor Beach School Bond scheduled for May was withdrawn, with a tenative re-scheduled vote for August. The August date will be re-visited at a future board meeting.
The regular meeting, scheduled for March 25th, has been canceled in accordance with Gov. Whitmer and the MDHHS' Orders on large gatherings.
