Huron County will join it's neighbors at restricting access to county offices because of the coronavirus. Chairman of the Board Sami Khoury ordered the closure of county owned facilities to the public through next Monday, March 23rd at a special meeting Tuesday morning. The offices would resume normal operation March 24th, but there will be a regular meeting of the board that day which could extend it. The board can't meet under Michigan's Open Meetings Act if the building is closed to the public. In the interim, the offices will use the phone and e-mail for much of its work, and if someone needs to come in, they will need to call the particular office to schedule an appointment when an office employee would have to come down and open the door for them. The Sheriff's Department and the jail already has some changes implemented to keep the virus out of the jail and minimize contact for employees. Per the County Treasurer, the Register of Deeds and the County Treasurer's offices are partnering with the Vets office to utilize a drop box for deeds and payments. We will have a drop box placed outside of the South entrance of the County Building before the close of business Tuesday. The drop box will be handicap accessible. Also, please note people should NOT place cash in the drop box for payments to the Treasurer's office. The title companies and attorneys are also encouraged to utilize the drop box for items for the Register of Deeds office.
The video of the meeting below with Ann Hepfer of the Huron County Health Department and Randy Miller of the Emergency Services office gave an overview of the efforts thus far concerning the virus outbreak. The closure order can be viewed in the PDF file below.
