State Sens. Ed McBroom and Ken Horn donned their hockey jerseys and sticks under the dome of the state Capitol on late last week in support of the upcoming Battle of the Bridge veteran hockey game on Feb. 22.
"I encourage everyone to make plans to attend this exciting night of hockey and family fun," said McBroom, R-Vulcan. "This is a unique event where veterans are showcasing their sports talent to offer support and respect to their fellow comrades and getting the public involved as well. While I'll be pulling for an Upper Peninsula Veterans Hockey Club victory, the real winners are the members at the D.J. Jacobetti Home."
The match between the Michigan Saginaw Spirit Warriors, represented by Horn, and the Michigan Upper Peninsula Veterans Hockey Club, represented by McBroom, will be held at 7 p.m. in Houghton at Dee Stadium, which is known as the birthplace of professional hockey.
The teams feature all-military veteran rosters and will compete for peninsula supremacy as well as to support a good cause - all proceeds from the event will be donated to the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette.
Admission for the game is $5 per person, but is free of charge to all active military, all military veterans, police, firefighters, EMS and children under 12 years of age.
For a bit of added fun, the lawmakers shook hands on a friendly wager - the senator representing the winning team will receive a meal from the losing senator's hometown. Should the U.P. team win, Horn will provide a chicken dinner from Frankenmuth, and if the Saginaw team wins, McBroom will provide a hearty pasty meal.
