A pick up truck went through the ice Sunday in the Lexington Harbor. People fishing on the ice called 9-1-1 to report it about 12 noon. Citizens helped convince the man who drove the truck on to the ice to exit the truck and jump to safety. The 62 year old Kimball man was treated and released by EMS at the scene and was arrested by Lexington Police. Lexington Police Chief Larry Sheldon told us that the man was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He was taken to McKenzie Hospital of Sandusky to draw blood and officials will await the toxicology report. Sheldon said witnesses told him the suspect was at the south side of the boat launch playing music loudly. Then drove on to the ice toward the mouth of the harbor. Outside the harbor there is no ice and the pick up went through when the ice got too thin to support its' weight. Sanilac Sheriffs deputies were part of the recovery efort to remove the 2016 Dodge Ram from 12 feet of water. The truck was about 850 feet from shore. The dive team and Lexington Fire Department organized the recovery. They cut a series of large triangles in the ice that was up to 14 inches thick. Divers swam under the ice and connected lines to the truck. The truck was towed under the ice toward the launch ramp in the harbor until it was too low to tow under the ice. Personnel cut a massive hole and the truck was towed out onto the boat launch ramp. Some images can be viewed in the written story on thumb net dot net.
