Harbor Beach Lighthouse is offshore from the city of Harbor Beach, accessible only by boat from the public marina with help from the Harbor Beach Lighthouse Preservation Society.
The Army Corp of Engineers gave ownership of the cast iron and brick tower to the city in 2010. The Coast Guard no longer uses the Lighthouse that was erected in 1885 and donated the building to the city in 2010. In 2015 the Coast guard officially discharged the building from use. In its time serving as an official Lighthouse to the shallow harbor, it proved a “sign of hope” for the 47,460 ships seeking shallow water refuge. Harbor Beach and the Lighthouse Society each maintain the lighthouse both physically and through storytelling.
“In Harbor Beach, this lighthouse welcomes sailors into a protective harbor,” shares Harbor Beach Lighthouse Preservation Society President, Wayne “Skip” Kadar. “The lighthouses are refered to as the castles of the United States. We need to maintain these; they are not building them anymore. We need to show our descendants and younger people what life was like."
