A long-awaited, emotional meeting as a resolution of intent passed before the Cass City Village Council Monday, in regards to marijuana growing facilities being within village limits.
Council voted with a three-four vote to not create nor adopt ordinance in regards to medical marijuana facilities. This vote comes after public hearing before the council from concerned citizens on either side of the field.
Many in favor of these types of facilities believed that they would bring business to downtown. One citizen made it a point to suggest the council would be voting against their own agenda, if voted no, to "bring business to Cass City" and should "look at this very seriously."
Other members considered a matter of medical urgency. Richard Guinther discussed is pain in his ailing legs and hip and was adamant about these types of businesses be in place, even just for growing.
For others it was a matter of not fitting fiscally for the city. Trustee Nancy Barrios did not think it would be a "great fit" for the city, which led to a counter argument from Trustee Rob Piaskowski asking, "why is it not a fit?" Much heated discussion ensued thereafter on the part of the council members.
Others also saw it as a matter of religious reservation and moral responsibility to not allow a business of this nature in the city. One gentleman commented, "I am against marijuana, it's not biblical if you're Christian, read your bible." Then continued to add that firefighters should be drug tested along as breathalyzed.
Mr. Vollmer, an investor was present at the meeting an offered a citation from a recent article by Time magazine which stated, "64 percent of people in the U.S. approve of marijuana in general." No further comment was made after his reference.
The end result provides no intent to provide ordinance or drafts for the investment group to build a growing facility for recreational marijuana in the Cass City Village Limits as of Monday evenings regular meeting. There will be no ordinance created at this time for any facility of the like either.
A video of the hearing and resolution is available for viewing in the article.
