Most fifteen year olds want to hit a Snap streak of 365 days or are trying to fight off the angsty urges, but for Addy Battel and her friend, Pearl, it is all about fighting hunger at home in their community.
Addy started the hunger relief project about three years ago when she and Pearl learned their were many children in the community who were low on protein. Through the National FFA, Addy was able to earn a $2,500 grant to purchase pigs, chickens, feed and supplies as well as the meat processing and enlisted the help of a hundred or so community kids to do the labor work. These youth also volunteered to distribute the meat and they are also
"We were just little kids," Addy said. "We were farm kids and we did know how to raise meat, and that's just when our community had just become a food desert and that's how we realized we could help. Since then it has evolved into this bigger idea of I want to do this at a global level."
The group is always looking for funding and organization can be a challenge in this project. In addition to the National FFA, the Dairy Farmers of America, Stop Hunger Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
The goal is to provide high-quality protein to low-income members of the community, Addy shared. The realistic goal is to empower youth, youth farmers especially, that they can make a difference.
