An A-10 "Wort Hog" military fighter jet made an appearance at Huron County Memorial Airport Saturday morning. There was an Open House at the airport, but no ceremonies. Local and military officials said it's believed to be the first fighter jet - fixed wing to land at the airport. Fighter helicopters have been there on previous occasions. It was a chance to see the aircraft up close and talk with military personnel from Selfridge Air National Guard Base, near Mt. Clemens. The aircraft with a top speed of close to 400 knots made the trip from Mt. Clemens in about 15 minutes. The pilot made a fly over of the airport to check out the runways, because they are shorter that they normally use. He has flown over the Thumb previously as part of the military training fly overs. He has been flying the A-10 for 19 years. St. Col. Brian -and we won't give his last name- as he told us the Taliban have been known to hassle family members of those military personnel when they are deployed.
