It is not the safari that keeps the Roughleys, Marilyn and John going back to Central Africa, to them it is all about the people and the culture.
Marilyn was born and raised in the Congo until she was seven years old due to missionary parents, and as a little girl loved her childhood and wanted to return. So, in 2002 both John and Marilyn decided that they would go together to the continent through mission work.
"They have no idea. I think most people think that people throughout the world live like we live," said Marilyn. "They live in houses like we have. Their lives are like our lives...so they just don't even understand the challenges and difficulties that third-world countries have."
Marilyn and John have both had their challenges to overcome. Of course, the language barrier has been an issue as French and other local dialects are also spoken throughout the mission. In addition, electricity and lack of water have also proven difficult.
In it all, they have learned that the people value relationships over everything and they are all content most of the time.
"When you talk to them, they are just grateful for another day to be alive," Marilyn shared. "And so, I think they teach me, and I have to be reminded all the time just to be grateful for what I do have."
