Summer is officially here, and that means the ceremonial Summer Solstice Ceremony at the Sanilac Petroglyphs has also taken place with the direction of the Anishinaabe from the Ziibiwing Center in Mount Pleasant.
The purpose of the center is to provide education on the Anishinaabe culture and traditions. Part of their culture is the traditional Summer Solstice Ceremony that takes place every year as close to June 21st as possible to give thanks to Mother Earth for her bounty in nature and resources.
It takes place at the Petroglyphs, as it did June 23rd this year, as the site is known as a spiritual one in their culture. The rock glyphs date back 1200 years, in some cases, and depicts lessons that are to be shared through mentioning and teaching one another.
"It's that ceremonial site where people would come together," stated Judy Pamp, Assistant Director of the Ziibiwing Center. "They would come here and we would actually do the ceremony pretty much like what we were doing today and having that feast to celebrate the connectiveness of all things in creation."
Summer is the time of abundance and rebirth and the ceremony is to celebrate just that, but anyone can visit and celebrate the glyphs from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend under supervision of the Department of Natural Resources.
