Fire of undetermined origin destroyed a Port Austin restaurant and damaged two adjacent businesses on Monday afternoon. Port Austin Fire Chief Don Zimmerman told us they were called to the Stock Pot Restaurant on Lake Street a block south of the main intersection about 4:45pm. When they arrived the Stock Pot was on fire and was spreading to the adjacent business "The Landing". Insurance investigators and State Fire Marshal will likely determine the cause of the fire. It started in the front between the two business, which have a 4 foot alley between them. That alley he said was filled with leaves and vegetation. He figured the Stock Pot would be a total loss. The Landing suffered some fire damage including a hole in the wall along with smoke and water damage. The Sportsman's Inn on the other side also had water and smoke damage. The fire had gotten into the double roof of the Stock Pot, which made it difficult for firemen. Port Austin Firemen were assisted by Kinde Area, Caseville, Bad Axe, Sigel and Elkton Fire Departments and were on the scene about 3 1/2 hours. Also assisting were State Police, Sheriffs Deputies, Port Austin Police, DNR Officers, and Thumb Ambulance. There were no injuries. Local businesses in the area helped firemen at the scene by supplying cold drinking water and ice because of the heat.
