A dash of Cinamon makes anything sweeter, with a little bit of spice of course, and the same can go for Cinamon Marker, the Farm to School Coordinator at Lakers and the chef for the recent Family Cooking Matters classes also at Lakers.
Cinamon was hired about three years ago by Elementary Principal, Kathy Dickens, as part of a grant, Farm to School. With this position Cinamon has been able to introduce some incredible, different dishes for dishes of the day and Harvest of the Month, to the Elementary students and staff, as well as the Secondary School.
She also coordinated with Renee Stacer, Cooking Matters Liason for MSU Extension Huron County, to offer classes after school, on her own time, teaching healthy-alternative recipes to students and families. The last class was held at Lakers Elementary, Wednesday, June 6th.
"I've always loved to cook. I went to college for a couple years, got an Associate's Degree in office accounting, and then decided I know what I want to do. I'm going to go to Culinary School, " Cinamon shared. "I stuck with that (office accounting) for twenty-five years...I finally decided somewhere in my forties that I was so done with that."
The passion for cooking came long before this position for Cinamon. She went to culinary school for a time before her husband and children came into the picture. After some time working in accounting, she decided it was time to pursue her passion once more, and that's when Stacer, also a good friend, proded her to apply to Lakers position, landing her a new career and family with the school.
"I love what I do." Cinamon said. "I love that I get to help develop these programs and work with the kids."
Asking Cinamon for her opinion on why her role is so important to the students growth at the school she stated, "I think they need someone to change things. If somebody's not going to step out of the box and expand breakfast or make some homemade choices... they definitely need someone who doesn't have to do what pleases everyone else."
Cinamon marker asks questions, is passionate and compassionate, and she also is willing to try something completely new. "My grandma used to say you can make something out of nothing, " she added. Cinamon is certainly something special and she definitely adds a little something to the school district
