Of five gradates statewide, Mason Lackey of Caseville received the Marine Option R.O.T.C. Scholarship for $180,000 to attend college for engineering while also working towards his goal being in the Marine Corps.
From the beginning, Mason had no desire to join the Marines, but instead, wanted to enter into an engineering field, such as Bio-Medicine Engineering, so that he could help people working in prosthetic designs.
Lackie's father is a former Marine so Mason then established a desire to join the Marines too as his postgraduate plans. Mason's dad supported his son's decision to join the force, but also insisted that he attend college.
Mason has applied to U of M for Bio-Medicine Engineering and also to Eastern Michigan University and appears partial for Eastern at this point. The scholarship will cover all costs of tuition, food, living expenses and books while allowing him to train in the R.O.T.C.
For the summer, Lackie is going to be enjoying his summer at home, working before heading to school in the fall.
