Randy's Hunting Center received a wonderful accreditation as the Ruger Retailer of the Year for 2017. A dinner event ensued Thursday evening at the Franklin Inn in Bad Axe, and an added treat was the emotional and troubling story of Richard Lipsey, former aide to Major General Philip C. Wehle who worked closely with President John F. Kennedy and during the turbulent time surrounding his sudden, tragic assassination, which was a large port of the evenings' events.
Lipsey eloquently told the tale of his rise to aide for General Wehle and how he came to know President Kennedy and his wife, Jackie, more than others may have.
As Lipsey said it, "He was a gentleman and that's all you ask for you know? I was a young man and he told me to sit down in his rocking chair every time I would go into his office."
In his storytelling he mainly focused on the autopsy room, where he and the doctors were the only ones present to view the body. Lipsey recalled being on of the few men who saw the body, naked and vulnerable, and being unable to explain the autopsy information or anything he saw until fifteen years after the fact due to federal constraints.
He added, "It was pretty traumatic and what do you do? It was shock, but then when the President's body got off and we took him off the airplane and took him to Bethesda Naval Hospital and opened up the case and laid him on this cold steel table and looked down at the naked body it was just overwhelming."
Asking him why he wanted to come to the event he stated, "Over the years Larry (another Ruger retailer in Alabama) and Randy have been friends and they talked about it. I only do it once or twice a year with groups of only friends, with a group that I know. I'll do it if they ask me. Randy asked me to come up here and I couldn't say no."
A video of an interview with Lipsey can be viewed as part of the article. Another video of Randy and the full event will be available soon on thumbnet.net
