Flatten your Stanleys and Stellas out there and send them on a journey across the nation, says the second-grade class of Stephanie Brining at North Huron Elementary School.
Brining started the project years ago, but both her students and the third-grade students were participating, and so for awhile she stopped. Currently, she is the only teacher to pick up the assignment and it has been very successful this year.
As part of this Social Studies and English hybrid lesson, students write a letter with their paper characters addressed to family or friends out of the state, if possible, explaining a book they read about 'Flat Stanley' which is about a character going on adventure with friends. Students explain then that their Stanleys and Stellas want to go on adventures too.
Brining stated, "I think a lot of our children are well traveled, but a lot of our kids haven't been even outside of Michigan, outside of Huron County even some of them... so to see all these letters and things come back and have the kids hear the words of the adventures their stanleys and stellas went on I think it has a big influence on them."
When asked if she would continue this work in the future, Brining added, "Definitely, I was excited to bring it back this year."
