April's EPBP School Board Meeting covered a lot of ground, school grounds that is. At this evening's meeting Superintendent Brian Keim mentioned the school bond and sinking fund proposal updates. The discussion highlighted conceptual ideas for the building updates which include a new auditorium, a recreational facility, parking lot extensions and other small upgrades and implementations.
Keim also mentioned the large and positive reception received by the school's community, including its students who, ages third to twelfth grade, have been introduced to the ideas being presented to the public.
Also discussed at the meeting was the part-time hiring of Safety Resource Deputy Darren Smithers, a retiring Bay City Police Officer who is seeking to stay active after retirement but in a smaller capacity. His job will entail being available as a resource for the school, students, and community members in times of outlying environmental or in school crisis situations. The Board has officially accepted the hiring of Smithers in this post and he will begin serving at Lakers once he is finalized under the Huron County Sheriff's Department.
The school also received generous donations for the FFA program as well as their backpack program, which is provided by the Eastern Food Bank and allows select students to receive extra food supplies for the weekends. In addition, the board accepted a pilot program in which certain students will be able to play cooperative club hockey with other students in the county and compete as an MHSAA team.
We were able to get a camera interview with Brian Keim to summarize tonight's key points.
