Fire believed to have started by spontaneous combustion from wet hay destroyed a barn east of Bad Axe Saturday. Sigel Township Fire Chief Joel Kiehl said firemen were called out at 10:30 Saturday morning, and were there until 6 in the evening. The approximately 44 by 96 foot long barn was full of mostly hay and some straw, and firemen had to pull the burning material out of the barn to make sure it was out. Firemen from a total of 6 departments were able to protect nearby structures at Kirsch Farms on M-142 and Johnston Roads. Sigel Township firemen had a full assist of Harbor Beach and Sherman Township Firemen, and tanker assists from Bad Axe, Port Hope and the Kinde Area Fire Departments. There were no injuries. The owners discovered the fire and called for the fire department.
