Throughout this school year, Laker Elementary students from each classroom took care of Chinook salmon in the large aquarium in the school lobby. The eggs were placed in the aquarium in November, and students eagerly waited until the eggs hatched in the early spring. Earlier this month, the young salmon (called fry) were taken from the aquarium and released into Saginaw Bay at Port Crescent State Park. Students who had been taking care of the salmon went on the trip, along with a few teachers. You simply cannot place the young salmon in the new environment - they were slowly introduced to the lake water. The salmon project was made possible with a grant from the US Fish and Wildlife. The grant paid for the tank, fish, training and supplies. The funds also paid for our pollinator garden, which is on the west side of the school. Some video footage was taken by teacher Mark Estelle, who had an underwater camera. Mark did a great job with the underwater video, hope you enjoy it.
