The morning after in Port Austin found Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson and Emergency Services Director for Huron County Randy Miller getting an aerial survey the damage of the tornado that went through about 6pm Saturday. Hanson told us it locked like the tornado traveled about 3 1/2 miles. There were houses and out buildings damaged and several destroyed - damage was extensive in the path of the storm. Overall six were injured from the storm and two firefighters got heat exhaustion. Miller told us the damage actually started west of Port Austin in the Sand Road area and then Larned Road where a house was destroyed, and a shed damaged. A trailer overturned several times, but the main damage was east of M-53 and Grindstone Road which is M-25. He said there was definitely a rotation pattern that could be seen in the debris. The people in the Bird Creek Farms Restaurant at the time could see the funnel cloud as it went by several hundred yards away and they took cover. Miller said debris was thrown quite a distance. He noted the twisters path continued out to the Pointe Aux Barques area by the golf course, went through some woods and then out in to the lake. Miller said DTE has a massive clean up and crews are up - but it will take awhile. People should avoid the area as the property owners are there trying to clean up and salvage what they can. He also said those using generators for power should be careful to keep any of the exhaust fumes from getting into the house.
