Governor Gretchen Whitmer aimes to enhancing public safety and inclusivity across Michigan. She recently signed four significant bills to address key issues, such as automobile theft, violence against the LGBTQ+ community, and fire safety.
House Bill 4718, introduced by Representative Laurie Pohutsky, makes Michigan the 20th state to ban the "gay or transgender panic defense," which previously allowed the victim's sexual orientation or gender identity to be used as a defense in violent crimes. Additionally, House Bills 5182 and 5183 criminalize the use of advanced technology to program key codes for automobile theft, targeting new methods of car theft. Senate Bill 328, sponsored by Senator Kevin Hertel, updates fire alarm standards to ensure better protection against fire hazards.
Governor Whitmer emphasized her commitment to public safety, noting that Michigan has invested over $1.5 billion in safety measures since she took office. This includes funding for a Public Safety Trust Fund, upgrading safety communication systems, and supporting local first responders. These legislative actions are part of a broader effort to make Michigan communities safer, stronger, and more inclusive.
