Although Huron County Commissioners are still in the process researching the possibility of going with different medical examiner services, they have received some feedback on the issue.
An email was included in the board's packet for Tuesday's meeting. Commissioners received an email regarding their search for medical examiner services. The email was to call attention to the fact that Macomb's Medical Examiner Daniel Spitz allegedly missed the cause of death in a case of a victim that was shot with a bullet twice in the head, and as a result of that error Macomb County terminated the contract for his services.
Those allegations in the email included a copy of a newspaper article that contained the information on the glaring medical error. The email went on to note that there (allegedly) were numerous items of sexual harassment and unprofessionalism by Spitz. It was learned that Bri Summersett with Secure Removal Services has offered mortuary transportation services secure removal.
During discussion of the issue it was pointed out the request for information on medical examiner service was not due until Aug. 7. The matter of looking at a different medical examiner started at a June commissioner meeting from a news report that Michigan Institute of Forensic Science and Medicine (MIFSM), which the county uses for medical as a examiner, was having financial and legal issues.
The Saginaw-based death investigation company has been in the spotlight for alleged financial troubles of non-payment of staff and bills, and lawsuits.
And, Saginaw County terminated its contract with MIFSM after it was discovered Dr. David Stockman had done autopsies of possible crime victims when he did not have the necessary credentials required to do them.
Huron Commission Chair Todd Talaski suggested the county start looking at other medical examiner services in case MIFSM goes out of business, and fellow commissioners agreed.
