Sheriff Kelly J. Hanson of the Huron County Sheriff's Office has provided details regarding the investigation of the tragic ATV crash that claimed the life of 68-year-old Randy S. Haley of Bad Axe earlier this month.
The incident occurred around 7:00 PM on July 6th at the intersection of Lackie Road and Soper Road in Colfax Township. According to preliminary investigations released by Sheriff Hanson, Haley was riding his 1996 Yamaha Quad ATV at high speed when he made a turn onto Lackie Road.
The accident drew a significant emergency response, including the Bad Axe Fire Department, Bad Axe Police Department, Central Huron Ambulance Service, a conservation officer from the Department of Natural Resources, and an investigator from the Huron County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The ATV overturned multiple times, ejecting Haley from the vehicle before landing on him. Despite the swift response from emergency personnel, Haley was pronounced dead at the scene due to the injuries sustained in the crash.
Sheriff Hanson stated that the investigation will take a few weeks to reconstruct the events leading to the accident. The Sheriff's Office is awaiting a written finding from the pathologist to ensure a thorough investigation before releasing the ATV to the family. This process is expected to take several months.
An autopsy was conducted to further understand the circumstances surrounding Haley's death. The Sheriff's Office, along with an investigator from the Huron County Medical Examiner's Office, is actively working on the follow-up investigation.
A memorial service for Randy S. Haley will be held at a later date.
