The inaugural Frank Murphy Academic in Residence Weekend took place in Harbor Beach on July 19-20, attracting attendees from as far as New York City. Organized by the Friends of the Frank Murphy Memorial Museum, the event highlighted Supreme Court Justices Frank Murphy and Thurgood Marshall.

Linda Sheryl Greene, the first Frank Murphy Scholar, discussed civil rights jurisprudence from the 1920s to the 1960s with Greg Zipes, author of "Justice and Faith - The Frank Murphy Story."

Sheila Eddy, president of the Frank Murphy Friends, opened the event with a history of the Museum, followed by a roundtable with city manager Ron Wruble, lead docent Lori Murawske, and retired teacher Kathleen Tighe. Harbor Beach high school student Isaiah Kabban read his winning essay from the 2023 Frank Murphy Essay Contest.

A panel moderated by Bad Axe attorney Donald Clark, featuring judges and attorneys, discussed current court issues in relation to Murphy's time. Greene also highlighted Thurgood Marshall's impact on civil rights.

Supported by the Huron County Community Foundation, the event underscored Justice Murphy's lasting influence on civil rights and judicial thought.
