A wrong-way driver on I-69 near Capac nearly collided with a truck Sunday evening. A quick maneuver by the truck driver saved a head-on collision, but the wrong-way driver struck the trailer, causing their vehicle to roll over and sustain life-threatening injuries.
Just before 9:30 PM on July 21, 2024, St. Clair County Central Dispatch received a distressing call: a vehicle was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-69 near Capac. Moments before St. Clair Sheriff Deputies could arrive, the rollover crash occurred.
Upon reaching the scene, deputies found that a 2003 Chevy Malibu, driven by the wrong-way driver, had collided with a trailer being towed by a 2013 Dodge Ram 2500. The impact caused the Malibu to roll over. The driver of the Ram, in a quick attempt to avoid the collision, had pulled into the right lane and fortunately escaped injury.
The driver of the Malibu sustained life-threatening injuries and was initially transported to McLaren Lapeer for emergency care. Given the severity of the injuries, the individual was later airlifted to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor for advanced treatment.
The St. Clair County Accident Investigation Team is currently delving into the specifics of the incident. More information will be provided as the investigation unfolds.
