There will soon be a large vacant area in the heart of downtown Sebewaing. The vacant area will be created when several long-vacant buildings are razed.
Village officials worked out an agreement with the Huron County Land Bank for a demolition grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The money will be used to demolish two buildings. One of the buildings is located at 42 North Center Street, and the other building is located at 50 North Center Street.
Buildings at those locations are where a former restaurant and theater are located, and the business building with apartments above it that is next the river are to be demolished. Both of those buildings have been vacant for several years and are in disrepair. The maximum grant is $500,000 for both buildings to be demolished.
The Huron County Land Bank is the grantee of the funding.
The Huron County Economic Development Corporation worked with the State Land Bank, which is the grantor, along with ARPA funds from the Federal Government.
The Village of Sebewaing is just a beneficiary of that funding, according to village Clerk Dena Kish.
