Although grants were awarded to some schools nearly two years ago to buy electric powered buses, it took awhile for some district's to receive them.
At long last the Unionville - Sebewaing Area School District received their electric bus in June they had ordered with plans to use it during the 2023 - 2024 school year. USA ordered the bus from Midwest Transit Company. The bus has been put into service for some short runs so drivers are familiar with them before school starts next month.
Besides USA, the Ubly School District, and the Harbor Beach School District were also given funds for the purchase of electric power buses. The three districts were given $4,950,000 to share to switch from fossil fueled buses to electric.
The Ubly School District received $2,379,000 in funds for six buses, which will replace their fleet. The Harbor Beach School District received $1,185,000 in funding for three electric buses, and the USA District received $395,000 in funding for one electric bus.
Overall, the EPA awarded a total of $54,060,000 to Michigan schools for the purchase of electric buses.
