The Tuscola County's Recycling Center and Tuscola County Mosquito Abatement have joining forces to eliminate breeding grounds for mosquitos. Old unused tires are a prime breeding ground for the pesky insect that can carry diseases to humans and animals.
The following is a list of areas that have agreed to participate in the tire collection, which is free:
Elkland Township will host a collection on Aug. 3 in the Elkland Township Cemetery, Cass City, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Participates are asked to bring their own help to unload the tires if they are not able to do so themselves. The collections are limited to Tuscola County residents only. It is not available for out-of-county residents or businesses.
Residents are limited to bringing only seven tires per vehicle. Tires should be clean and not attached to an axleColl. Tires should be no taller than 48 inches high and no more than 12 inches wide, and no commercial tires will be accepted.
The collection is not for forest, airplane, golf cart, logging, earth moving mining for solid truck or tractor tires.
For more information, call 989-672-1673 or email recycle@tuscolaounty.org.
Residents can do their part in reducing the mosquito population by participating in collection drives, and by eliminating breeding grounds for mosquitoes like standing water in pools and buckets. Mosquitoes can be more than just a nuisance. Their bite can cause serious illnesses so precautions should be taken to avoid mosquito bites.
