Russell Julius Spruytte, 38, of Marlette, was charged with 12 criminal counts, and he is considered a habitual offender when his prior bad acts were taken into consideration.
Spruytte decided to plead guilty during a circuit court hearing in Sanilac County just days before his trial was to start on multiple charges. Under an agreement with the Sanilac Prosecutor's office, Spruytte pled guilty to weapons-firearms-receiving and concealing, and he pled pled guilty to two amended counts of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder regarding shooting at his two roommates. The shootings stems from a Sept. 13, 2023 incident.
Law enforcement officials were dispatched to a residence on Little Street for a report of two men being shot at by fellow roommate (Spruytte). During the investigation, the residence found a semi-automatic gun and other evidence.
As part of the agreement for his pleading guilty, the charges against Spruytte of weapons - firearms discharge in or at a building; possession of weapons - ammunition by a felon, and weapons felon ammunition possession by felon were dismissed.
In addition, Spruytte is considered a habitual offender- fourth offense from previous convictions of breaking and entering. The judge can order Spruytte to spend the rest of his life in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 28.
