Demolition has started at 101 N. Port Crescent St. in downtown Bad Axe for the Huron County Community Foundation's (HCCF) new Community Hub.
The right-hand turn lane of Port Crescent St. was closed at the downtown intersection on Monday, July 15, and may remain closed as construction continues.
The building will be dismantled to ground level over five days, involving setup, three days of demolition, and final cleanup.
According to the Huron County View, Rooney Contracting Co. is handling the demolition after winning the bid through R.C. Hendrick and Son.
Temporary lane and sidewalk closures will ensure safety. Following demolition, Michigan Environmental Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) will conduct ground remediation with a $600,000 grant from the Huron County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority and EGLE, due to the site's former use as a gas station.
The project aims to transform the area into a Community Hub, enhancing facilities and services in downtown Bad Axe.
