Security grant will help pay for equipment for some police departments

During Thursday's meeting of the Tuscola County Commissioners, approval was given to make some equipment purchases.
The county will buy three portable Motorola 6000 radios, accessories, and cover radio fees by using a homeland security grant. The Law Enforcement Terrorism Prevention Activities group awarded the county $18,498 to purchase the radios and related equipment. Those new radios will go to the Gagetown and Kingston police departments.
According to the county's Emergency Services Manager Deputy Steve Anderson, the county will buy the radios and related equipment, and the grant will pay back the county for the cost.
In other matters, Jim McLoskey, who is with the Tuscola County Economic Development Corporation, did a presentation on Leadership, Education and Development (L.E.A.D.) Program that was started in 1997. Jim McLoskey explained the LEAD program helped groom several who have stepped up to take key roles in the county. Some of those who are graduates of the program are: Commissioners Tom Young, Thom Bradwell, Clerk Jodi Fetting and Angie House are among a few who have taken the class who have gone on to play key roles in the county. Applications are being taken for those who want to participate in the LEAD program. County Controller - Administrator Neil Hammerbacher will distribute the application with a reply deadline for the board to consider candidates for the upcoming year.
In other matters, commissioners approved a proposed worksite agreement with Genesee, Shiawassee, Thumb (GST) Michigan Works experience program for fiscal year 2024 - 2025. The agreement is to help provide short-term work experience.
Also, the Region VII Area Agency on Aging's Proposed Annual Implementation Plan for fiscal year 2025 was approved as well.
And, appointed was Nicholas Pearcy to fill a part-time position on the Parks and Recreation Commission that will end on Dec. 31, 2024.
