A 17-year-old Birmingham youth, experiencing an apparent mental health crisis, caused multiple vehicle collisions across several communities before being rescued from Lake Orion.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team responded to a report around 12:15 p.m. on Sunday that the youth had crashed his vehicle into eight other vehicles, abandoned it, and fled on foot before jumping into Lake Orion.

Witnesses reported the teenager swimming into the lake and screaming at nearby boaters. Deputies and members of the Orion Township Fire Department successfully retrieved him with a rescue boat, bringing him safely to shore. The entire incident lasted approximately 90 minutes.

Further investigation revealed that the youth had collided with vehicles in both Auburn Hills and Orion Township, resulting in damage to eight vehicles. Traffic on M-24 experienced temporary delays, but fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The youth was transported to a hospital, where deputies filed a petition for a mental health committal, emphasizing the importance of addressing mental health crises with appropriate care and support.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, help is available. Contact the National Helpline any time at 988 via text, call, or online chat.
