The Michigan Dept. of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) will launch a special health-care program this fall to some hospitals that have birthing units. The Michigan Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health that has agreed to participate in the joint commission Maternal Levels of Care (MLoC) Verification Program will be receiving payments in the fall.
The hospitals can be reimbursed for the costs associated with MLoC verification, which include the annual fee along with on-site visit fees, in addition to receiving a lump sum payment for participation in both programs. The program is being funded by $9 million in general fund dollars and funds will be released to all participating hospitals in September.
MDHHS offers this service as it is an important program that supports birthing units through hospital implementation of patient safety bundles and risk-appropriate care for pregnant and postpartum women. From 2011-2020, there were 172 women who died of pregnancy-related issues in Michigan. Hypertensive disorders and hemorrhage are leading causes of pregnancy-related maternal mortality.
