Summer road trips bring unique driving challenges. It's crucial to ensure your vehicle's air conditioning is in top shape, not just for comfort but to protect passengers' health, especially children, older adults, and those with medical conditions. Heatstroke is a serious risk during the summer. Never leave children unattended in a vehicle, even briefly. A child's body heats up much faster than an adult's, and car temperatures can quickly become dangerous.
Here are some essential facts: A child's body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult's. Heatstroke begins at a core body temperature of 104 degrees, and death can occur at 107 degrees. Over the past 25 years, more than 970 children have died of heatstroke in cars, tragedies that are always preventable. In 2023 alone, 29 children died this way. Record numbers were seen in 2018 and 2019, with 53 deaths each year.
Always keep your vehicle locked to prevent accidental entries. Parents, teach your children that vehicles are not a play area, and ensure your A/C is working well.
