Between the aging population and opioid overdoses, there is a special machine available that does an even better job than manual CPR. The LUCAS machine does CPR compressions on its own, and it produces better survival rates.
Ambulance Coordinator Beth Swartzendruber informed the Elkton Village Council at their last meeting she would like to purchase a LUCAS machine. She pointed out that Huron County received funds from the opioid settled lawsuit that could be used to purchase a LUCAS machine. With the LUCAS device, fatigue, individual variations or psychological factors are removed from the CPR process, and there is no need for switching CPR providers every two minutes.
The device provides high-quality and safer chest compressions in situations during patient transport and during prolonged CPR efforts. Swartzendruber said she submitted an application for funds to get one and is waiting to hear back from the county if she is successful in securing funding to get one.
During her report to the council, she noted that two of the EMT's the village sponsored to take the medical classes are working on the ambulance. They both were on call during the holiday and responded to several calls. She also reported that there were 23 calls for service in June and that 13 of them were billable calls.
