A Port Hope man was arraigned in Huron County on new charges for leaving the scene of an accident while out on bond for a previous OWI offense.
Ryan Robert Martin, 45, of Port Hope, first encountered legal trouble on June 10th when he faced a felony OWI third offense charge after crashing his truck into a ditch. He called his wife, claiming he was lost in a field; she called the police, who found him allegedly drunk and wandering the roadway.
On June 27th, Martin missed a probable cause conference, leading to a warrant for his arrest. He surrendered on July 1st, stating he had crashed his motorcycle the night before his hearing.
The Huron County Sheriff's Office found a wrecked motorcycle and a phone at the June 26th crash scene. According to their investigation, Martin's 1978 Harley Davidson Electra Glide was eastbound on Filion Road at 12:36 AM. The vehicle crossed the centerline, drove on the shoulder, and tipped over in a ditch on the north side of the roadway. The crash caused significant damage to the motorcycle, which had to be towed. Martin fled the scene, and alcohol is suspected to be a factor.
During Martin's arraignment on July 2nd, the prosecution emphasized his history of substance abuse, citing a prior prison sentence for OWI third offense and his recent motorcycle crash. They expressed concern about potential harm and mentioned considering additional charges for leaving the scene of an accident. The defense noted the severe gash on Martin's face, highlighting his fortune that his brother was riding alongside him during the crash.
On July 11th, Martin faced the new charges, including failure to report an accident, operating with a revoked license, and no insurance, all misdemeanors. Martin stood mute on the charges on Thursday in the 73B District Court.
