The severe thunderstorm last Friday has been confirmed to have produced a tornado in Michigan's Thumb. The National Weather Service (NWS) verified that an EF-0 tornado, the weakest level, touched down in Huron Township, Huron County.
On July 5th, tornado sirens were activated in Bad Axe, Port Hope, Port Austin, and Harbor Beach. Fire departments from these areas and Sherman Township monitored the skies and communicated via Huron Central Dispatch. Randy Miller, Director of Huron County Emergency Services, provided photos of the damage to the NWS.
The NWS reported that the tornado developed north of Kinde Road, moved east, crossed Huron City Road, and dissipated in a nearby field. With estimated peak winds around 75 mph, it created a short path of damage primarily affecting crops and some softwood and hardwood trees.
Key details from the NWS findings include an EF-0 rating, peak winds of 75 mph, a path length of 0.3 miles, and a path width of 25 yards. The tornado lasted from 4:38 PM to 4:40 PM EDT, starting north of Kinde Road and ending near Huron City Road.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the damage was mostly limited to crops and a few trees. The NWS thanked the Huron County Emergency Management on their social media platforms for providing photos of the damage.
