A driver was removed from Huron County roads last Friday after Apple's automatic crash detection technology alerted emergency services to a vehicle in a ditch.
In the early hours of July 5th, around 1:53 AM, Huron Central Dispatch received an automatic alert from Apple's crash detection system, reporting a vehicle in a ditch on Rescue Road near the intersection with Brown Road in Brookfield Township.
According to the police report, a 2014 Chevy Silverado was traveling east on Rescue Road when it veered off the roadway, entering the south side ditch. The driver, a 36-year-old from Saginaw, admitted to texting while driving, which led to the loss of control.
Though he claimed to be uninjured, Scheurer Hospital ambulance personnel checked him as a precaution. Further investigation revealed the driver had consumed alcohol, as he admitted drinking to the Sheriff Sergeant.
The vehicle sustained functional damage but was towed from the scene due to the driver's arrest for Operating While Intoxicated (OWI).
