The last weekend in June, the Sanilac County community gathered at the crossroads of Germania and Cooper Roads to honor the history of Germania, driven by the efforts of the "Germania Girls."

The two-sided historical markers revealed at the ceremony detailed the settlement's history, including early settlers like Henry Planz and William Bopp, the establishment of Zion Lutheran Church in 1876, and the resilience of the community through the 'thumb fires' of 1871 and 1881.

Henry Planz, who arrived in 1866, opened the first store and served as the first postmaster. Reverend John Boegner began his ministry in 1876, and his descendants still live in the area. Zion Lutheran Church remained active until 1974 when it merged with Juhl to form Hope Lutheran Church.

Barbara Kraft Kenny and the "Germania Girls," with support from landowners Guy and Carol Matheny, commissioned the two-sided metal sign featuring these historical highlights.

The dedication was a proud moment for descendants and community members, preserving the history in Marlette Township for future generations.
