A cougar was spotted last night at 9:39 pm in a food plot in Houghton County in Michigan's U.P. The sighting was posted to the
facebook group, "Yoopers," sparking significant interest and concern.
Cougars, considered endangered in Michigan, have been native to the state but are rarely seen. The last legally hunted cougar was in 1906 near Newberry. While there have been various sightings reported since then, none have been confirmed. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) maintains that cougars are not currently present in Michigan, although they created a cougar spotting team in 2008 to investigate potential sightings. Notably, there are no records of female cougars or reproduction in the area.
If you have physical evidence: such as a picture, carcass, or scat, of a cougar please contact the DNR
customer service center. After business hours can be reported to at the DNR Report All Poaching hotline at (800) 292-7800.
