Earwigs are everywhere this summer and don't appear to be going away any time soon. Due to the mild winter and wet spring, they have taken over Michigan. Residents have reported hundreds of the small insects invading their homes, sheds, and garages. While the large population of these creatures is certainly alarming as they look, earwigs are completely harmless. They don't pinch or bite, won't go after your ears, and generally stick to groups.
Some ways to get rid of and keep away earwigs are to run a dehumidifier in your home, turn off outdoor lights at night, and remove standing water. Baking soda or diatomaceous earth spread by doorways is a good trick to keep them from entering homes. Residents have taken to Reddit to voice their own home remedies.
One home remedy is equal parts rubbing alcohol and water mixed into a spray bottle, which makes them easy to sweep or vacuum up. It's recommended to spray 3-4 times to kill. Another way to get rid of these pests is by mixing equal parts soy sauce and water with a bit of dish soap and stir. The soy attracts them and the soap keeps them underwater to drown them.
