The Lexington Fire Department will unveil its new fire engine during a special event.

The new engine will be rolled out during a "Push in Ceremony" at noon on Monday, May 25 at the fire hall after the community's annual Memorial Day parade.

A push ceremony harkens back to the days when fire equipment was drawn by horses. To put equipment back in the fire station after a run, the horses were detached from the equipment and then hand pushed into the station for storage.

That practice fell by the wayside over the years because the equipment was no longer drawn by horses, but every once in awhile it is used when a fire department want to honor the purchase of new piece of firefighting equipment.
